Joining a PUG [Pickup group.] Can be one of the frustrating and downright annoying thing you can do in Guildwars, it can also be very rewarding. Here are a few pointers which I tend to follow:-
- Try to get a good mixture of damage, tanking, healing and defences.
- If you are struggling to find that second Monk you need, ask the group if they can draft a Guild member in to help!
- Sometimes a whisper to join the group can be more effective than an anonymous invite.
- Don't lie about your experience, objectives for the mission etc... It's not fair, you'll get caught out and you won't gain anything.
- If someone says Bonus only, don't drag them into the mission saying okay - then skip the bonus, they will leave the group and you will be a man down.
- Be cautious inviting and accepting invites from players who appear to be a much lower level than they should be for where in the game they are.
- The plus points of low level characters is they often know the missions well and can offer good advice on getting through easily.
- The downside of low level characters is they can't help the group much and will die quickly if they get attacked.
- Having a person 10 levels lower than they should be for where they are is like having a character start on worse than maximum death penalty.
- If you find a good group - talk to them and get to know them, then add-friend them. Adding everyone under the sun just makes your list big and you won't remember who anybody is!
- Be creative, sometimes you think you must have a monk. but necromancers with wells of blood and various other things can get you by in the right circumstances.
- Always try to help a guild member with a request for help - you never know when you'll need someone who knows what they are doing to help you out!
- Never, ever, under any circumstances, start dis-respecting other players - no matter how much you disagree with their playstyle. Calling them n00b, swearing and writing in caps will just make you look like an idiot and word gets around. People won't join a group lead by a renowned idtiot.
- Agree on roles and who will lead BEFORE you start, then do your best to fill that role. Sorting out your inventry so you can pickup that purple item is all very well if you're not the only healer monk and the party is being destroyed by an angry MOB and everyone is calling for help and heals.
- Try to agree on who is going to call, it saves confusion and helps you kill the enemies quicker and more safely.
Well those are a few tips, most of it's common sense - but you will meet people in the game with an amazing lack of common sense. Keep it polite and friendly, treat other people how you like to be treated.
