This might sound ridiculous to suggest, but doing the bonus missions on your way through the game is a bad idea. It's much better to play through until you reach level 20 NOT doing any bonus missions.
You ask why?
Well, missions are a great source of XP usually they pay 1000 xp. Levelling up by hunting is easy for low level characters, once you hit level 20 decent XP is less easy to get. Going back and doing those near impossible seeming bonus missions now you are level 20 with alot more skills is alot easier. You got a definite 1000 xp out of it, plus you'll have no trouble getting into a party being several levels higher than most people wanting in.
