In PvP one of the most useless abilities I have found is Soul Reaping, but here is how it can be extremely effective in PvE.
My build was always to pump up blood as much as possible, then I would go with a secondary skill or just use blood, then I would put the rest into soul reaping. With this build you can use all your blood skills effectively. Life Siphon + Dark Pact while cycling through enemies works especially effectively when there is no enemy healer and even more so when you have allies or henchmen attacking as well. Shadow Strike and Vampiric Gaze work well when you need that life boost. And Well of blood is great for healing allies and yourself.
Later in the game when you get enough attribute points, I usually went with 14 blood (+1 from rune and +1 from scar and maxed attribute), 10 Soul Reaping, and the rest would go to my other skill set. This means as enemies die you get that nice +10 mana pop, and this is where my next strategy came in. I would grab the two collector items (max +15 mana, -1 mana regen truncheon; and +8 +15 mana, +30 health, -1 mana regen focus) and get 68 mana with 2 regen ... then I would completely rely on my soul reaping to restore mana. Lets face it, +2 regen is not even nearly enough to support a Necro. So with your high mana and high soul reaping you are able to throw spell after life degenerating spell at enemies while healing yourself, while gaining mana at an accelerated rate. Couple less on Soul Reaping and using a different weapon (with no mana degen) is also effective.
And to get into groups of people, just let them know you have well of blood (or well of power), blood ritual (or blood is power), and res-signet and then you could be considered a healer or generally strong attacker. What I've noticed is I usually deal a good more portion of the damage regardless of who I'm grouped with. My only problem is I tend to be frail and forget to heal myself with vampiric gaze and shadow strike while I'm concentrating on helping allies with other spells and dealing major damage.
