For the past few days, I have been looking around different Guild Wars websites for topics regarding the use of the salvage kits. Most of what I have read seems to say this:
Use the Salvage Kit [SK] on Magical items, Use Expert Salvage Kit [ESK] on Rare and Unique items, and Magical items that say “Highly Salvageable”.
Well I am here to offer you a different view. Personally, I have found that the payoffs are much greater if you use the ESK on ALMOST everything once you are at the higher level areas (The desert and beyond). How much does it cost for each use of the ESK? It costs 400 for the kit that gives you 25 uses. This means it will cost you 16g each time you use your ESK. What I have found when using this kit is that I get great salvages from items I least suspect, and even when I do not get these great salvages, I still get quantities of common crafting materials with a value that far exceeds a mere 16g.
Generally I would say:
Use the ESK on any Magical, Rare, and Unique items you get at the desert and beyond (I am referring to items you do not plan to keep or sell to other players of course). I hope this helps you.
