The best way to train your hero is by doing quests.
Some quests can give out 1000 exp to 10,000 and more that will be useful to level up your hero's that are still low level.
If you skip quests in factions and just do missions then those quests might be the quests you want since they give out usually 1000 exp or more.
If your just in nightfall and leveling up your heroes then the best place for you is to find quests that you missed. Then finally you could train them the hard way.
The hard way of leveling up your heroes would be to go out and kill monsters at there level while using rare scrolls to double how much exp your heroes receive.
Also on holiday events there might be quests that are repeatable.
