When going for legendary survivor, generally the best way to do it is skill capping for exp and using henchies because they're predictable. Because henchies follow you, and you don't want to die by going into battle first, send the henchies in first using a flag. If you have a warrior hero, send him in first all alone to soak up alot of damage.
henchies and heros are there for you to abuse in things like this - don't be afraid to do it!
