If you are trying to stock up on materials consider doing some quests or missions for the sole purpose of salvaging every drop you get. Swords usually give iron, but can get you some steel. Axes, and Hammers get you wood, and stone. Bows, and staves get you wood. Also salvage collectable drops because many items that are rarer can be obtained in this way. Feathers, glittering dust, and more can be salvaged from collectable drops.
