Once you get far enough into Factions and you complete quests from both the House of Zu Heltzer and Cavalon, you probably will complete quests and get totems and requestations. In my opinion the most effective way to use these is to trade them in for the superior salvage kits. Get one for each character (unless you have a storage character) and then either save up the rest for future uses or trade them in for keys if you plan to go to the elite missions.
