Everyone says henchies suck but to be honest they dont.
now when entering a area and ure to lazy to find a group or no one will take you. pick up henchies idealy you should have 2-3 healers, 2 warriors or assassins, 1 elementist, 1-2 necros and you. Depending on what you prefer you may change what henchie you use. Also do not be inpaitient with henchies, for they are better then a nooby group that takes 1 hour to do the mission/quest as henchies only take 15. However some new missions in faction are not henchable for reasons that you have to carry 2 items :(
