A very well written article was posted to the Guild Wars site today that takes a look at the competitive play aspect of the game and how it's looked throughout the ages. It takes a look back to the beginning of the world championships and how they looked when they got started up to the present and how it's changed over the years and most importantly, it takes a strong look at the future and what the team wants to see it evolve into.
