Q. When is Factions coming out?
A. ArenaNet offically anouced the release date was 28 April 2006 (28.4.06).
Q. How will Factions be treated relative to the original campaign?
A. Factions is sort of between a stand-alone game and an expansion set. On one hand, people may have accounts that only include Factions. These people will get access to the new areas, new professions, and new skills, but will not be able to get to the lands that players have previously been able to get to with the exception of the PvP areas on Battle Isles, which will be shared between the two. On the other hand, some players may choose to upgrade their existing accounts with Factions. In this case, they will have access to everything Factions-only players have as well as everything that is available now. Players may also choose to not purchase Factions at all, in which case they will have access to what is available now but nothing that is available to Factions players.
Q. Will there be extra character slots, and if so how many?
A. There will be extra character slots available to players who purchase Factions. How many is still unknown, as is how they will be added. It is known that there will be between 2 and 100, however. There are several ways in which they may work:
1. Players who have Factions-only accounts may get 4 character slots, just as players who only have the original Guild Wars do, while players who upgrade an existing account will get 6 or more slots.
2. Players who have only the original Guild Wars will continue having 4 slots while players who have purchased Factions will get 6 or more whether they have upgraded an account or not.
3. All players will get 6 or more character slots whether or not they have purchased both copies.
Most information released by ArenaNet suggests that the last is unlikely. The most likely is number one, where combined accounts have more slots than single-game accounts.
Q. Will the maximum Level be raised from 20 to something higher, like 30 or 40?
A. The current Level cap of 20 is not going to be higher in Factions due to balance issues. ArenaNet has intimated that it's very likely never to become higher (again due to balance issues).
Basically, the argument goes like this: 5 extra levels means 100 extra Health. For a Warrior, that goes a lot farther than a Mesmer, since the Warrior has more armor. So, it's unbalanced there. Also, 5 extra levels means probably 75 more attribute points, which would mean another near-max attribute for an Elementalist, which would go a lot farther for the Ele than it would for the Mesmer, since Elementalists now tend to focus entirely on one element because it maximizes their effectiveness while a Mesmer usually has a 3-4 way split. This would increase the number of effective combos for an Elementalist drastically while only slightly improving the existing combos for a Mesmer.
Q. Where will new areas be located?
A. Once a character has access to Lion’s Arch, they gain the ability to travel via the map to other continents using the boat-shaped icon on the map near Lion’s Arch. This allows travel to the Battle Isles and will allow players who have purchased Factions to go to the land of Cantha, which is a separate world map. There will be an equivalent city in the lands of Cantha which will provide the same services to characters progressing through the Factions campaign which will allow travel to the Battle Isles and Lion’s Arch. Cantha and the current area known as Tyria are entirely separate world maps located on entirely different continents; there is no land travel between the two and one must use the ship travel on the map.
Q. What new professions are going to be available?
A. There are two new professions that are going to be available to play for people who have purchased Factions. These professions are the Assassin and Ritualist. You may find descriptions of many of their skills in the site’s Skills section. Some players have also found items that require the attributes of Assassins or Ritualists to use to fullest effect, but most information suggests that these drops are bugs that ArenaNet is trying to eliminate. ArenaNet has also stated that each 'expansion' will feature two new Professions.
Q. I heard the old professions are going to get new Skills as well?
A. With Guild Wars Factions, all professions will be getting some new Skills. Out of the 300 new skills (90 of which being Elites). Which are added with Factions.
Q. I'd like Guild Wars Merchandise, is there any or will there be any?
A. ArenaNet is currently working on that. Gaile Gray's been asking player's input in her recent visits. T-shirts, Caps and Charr slippers have been mentioned...
Q. Will there be multiple editions of Guild Wars Factions?
A. Yes, there will be 2 versions of Factions. One being the Collector's Edition. The other being the Standard Edition. These will include 2 different things.
Standard:
- 2 Game CDs.
- Double-Sided Poster: Map of Canta and Factions Poster (Europe Only).

Q. When factions is relased this spring, for those who already have an account have to buy factions or will it upload when we log in that day?
A. Guild Wars Factions is a seperate game, you don't need to have Guild Wars "Classic" to play it. Buying both will unlock more playing options though. As well as the 2 different places (Canta and Tyria).
Q. People are saying that Guild Wars Factions will have a monthly subscription fee. Is that true?
A. Absolutely not. ArenaNet fully intends to keep the Guild Wars series devoid of monthly costs. Expansions / new installments like Factions will however cost money to purchase. This rumor keeps popping up, probably because in several asian countries there exist Time-cards for Guild Wars. This is because that's actually preferable to the peple there who mostly play the game in Internet-Café's.
Q. I've heard something about Alliances, what are they and what form will they take?
A. With Guild Wars Factions we'll see the introduction of Alliances between Guilds. Which means you will have a new communication tab: 'Alliance'. Alliances are made up of 10 guilds. Once an Alliance obtains a city, it will have access to "elite" PvE quests, and the quality (and challenge level) of the elite mission will scale to the size of the city. Over the course of 24 hours, whichever faction wins the most battles for a city will own it. Players may choose an alliance--Luxons or the Kurzicks, which affects conflicts in the story and pvp areas such as a "king of the hill" scenario.
The Kurzicks are an ultra-conservative and highly religious culture whose socially frozen society worships the status quo. In fact, the world of the Kurzicks is a mirror of the petrified forest in which they carve their beautiful homes.
The Luxons, on the other hand, are a wild nation of seafaring nomads who have traded in their ships for magical walking machines that traverse the jade ocean. As a group, the Luxons are a walking advertisement for the Darwinian social order -- only the strong survive.
Q. How about customizations of Guild Halls, any chance of that?
A. Yes, though ArenaNet is being very tight lipped about what those will be, they've repeatedly said we'd be 'blown away' by the options we'll get. Guild Hall customization's been one of, if not the most requested feature, they're sure to do something with it. Let's all hope it includes showing the Guild's heraldry on the flags all the time, not jsut during Guild vs. Guild combat.
This FAQ will continue to be updated as further information about Guild Wars: Factions becomes available. |
