In a game as large as GuildWars, there will always be someone out to steal from the unknowing or trick the average player. Hopefully I can bring some light to some of the more common scams - a well informed player is a safe player.
Most commonly, a scammer will be offering to buy something expensive. Now, they offer the money up front, and everything goes well, but they change the amount of money they are trading before you even notice! Typically - this happens alot with ectoplasms in the Temple of Ages. The only real way to avoid this entirely is to keep your eye on their money when you click accept - otherwise they still have a small chance to change it.
Another common scam is mostly done to newer players - someone will offer to sell them an item that is worth next to nothing, but for alot of money. For this reason you should always ask a friend or your Guild before you make a purchase, if you're not sure of the true value. I see it happen alot with the Uniques in Ascalon City.
The third most frequently used scam is an advertisement of either an exploit or service which they either cannot do or do not intend to fulfill. This happens alot with runners - they will ask to be paid up front then just leave. Other times someone will advertise that they can duplicate items, then just keep what you give them. NEVER trust someone advertising an exploit. NEVER join a group for a run that asks to be paid before the halfway point.
These are the most common scams - but be wary, for some scammers are fairly ingenious in their ways. Remember, ask a friend for a price check, and never pay up front. Hopefully you can see through the subtle mirage a scammer has crafted over his trade, but sometimes you just need to be extra careful.
