Jaga Moraine Spectral Vaettir Farming in HM!

Welcome to my guide! This is my first, so please forgive any mistakes. This guide will teach you how to farm Spectral Vaettirs in Hard Mode for Glacial Stones (and indirectly, Glacial Gauntlets). This build uses popular Earth Magic skills to negate the damage of the Mesmer’s base attacks and the combination of Glyph of Swiftness and Obsidian Flesh to maintain immunity to the Vaettir’s powerful degeneration spells.

Preparation

This build requires little to no set up; it is possible using your regular PvE armor and any weapon with an Enchanting Mod. However, there are some items that will work better than others.

Attributes and Skills:

1: Arcane Echo
Enchantment Spell. If you cast a spell in the next 20 seconds, Arcane Echo is replaced with that spell for 20 seconds. Arcane Echo ends prematurely if you use a non-spell skill.

2: Teinai’s Crystals
Spell. Foes adjacent to you are struck for 106 damage, but are cured of any negative conditions.

3: Crystal Wave
Spell. Foes adjacent to you are struck for 106 damage, but are cured of any negative conditions.

4: Glyph of Swiftness
Glyph. For 15 seconds, your next 2 spells recharge 25% faster, and projectiles from those attacks move 200% faster.

5: Obsidian Flesh [elite]
Enchantment Spell. For 21 seconds, you gain +20 armor and cannot be the target of enemy spells, but move 50% slower.

6: Stoneflesh Aura
Enchantment Spell. For 16 seconds, damage you receive is reduced by 33 and you are immune to critical attacks.

7: Mantra of Earth
Stance. For 74 seconds, whenever you take earth damage, the damage is reduced by 44% and you gain 2 energy.

8: Storm Djinn Haste
Enchantment Spell. For 14 seconds, you move 33% faster. Each second that you are moving, you lose 1 energy.

Equipment

The only really required piece of equipment necessary to farm Vaettirs is A stone headpiece with a Superior Earth Magic Rune. The rest is up to personal preference (Needless to say, max armor is required). I use my regular PvE armor, simply because I couldn’t be bothered to craft new armor. If the shield you are using doesn’t have a -2 Damage(While Enchanted) Inscri.ption or a -2 Damage (While in a Stance) Inscri.ption, then using Geomancer insignias is advisable.

An Enchantments last 20% Longer suffix mod is required on whatever weapon you choose to use. I recommend a One Handed weapon (Wand, Sword, Axe, or Spear) with an 'I have the power!' inscri.ption and an Enchanting Mod. Your offhand should either have a 'Run for your Life!' or 'Sheltered by Faith' Mod, each of which will grant you constant damage reduction of 2.

Usage

I thought of trying this build one day when, after checking PvX Builds for a build I could use to acquire the 100 Glacial Stones I wanted for Glacial Gloves. The build I got there was starting to get on my nerves; due to the Vaettir’s high elemental armor(160AL), sliver armor was only hitting 7 at a time. It was unbearably slow. I considered all of the Armor Ignoring Area of Effect spells that I knew of, and decided to try the combination of identical skills Teinai’s Crystals and Crystal Wave. I must admit, I was immensely surprised when these two one-shot, 20 seconds recharge skills managed to kill all 60 Vaettirs nearly 3 times as quickly as the famed farming skill Sliver Armor.

Running to Jaga Moraine

The Run is by far the easiest part of this Farm. If done correctly, you don’t aggro a foe even once. Starting from Longeye Ledge in Hard Mode, run west, avoiding agro, and keeping up Storm Djinn’s Haste to cut down on time. This is the route that you will follow:
*Note:* Occasionally a wurm will spawn; after the knockdown, continue running with Storm Djinn’s Haste. There is a theory that the wurms only spawn and use Wurm Bile when you are wielding a melee weapon; I have no opinion and this: If you choose to believe it, run with a caster weapon, if not, do whatever you want.

Gathering the Aggro

The hardest part of the execution of this build, in my opinion, is the gathering of the mobs. There are 9 groups of 4 Spectral Vaettirs on the right side, and 6 groups of 4 on the left. First, make sure to take the Norn Blessing from the nearby NPC manning a Ressurection Shrine. Approach the closest mob of Vaettirs on your right, and cast your skills in order, starting at #4 and moving down through #8. Run towards the Vaettirs, gathering as many as possible. When Stoneflesh Aura recharges, you will have around 2-3 seconds to begin casting it. Keep in motion as much as possible, and try to keep most of the vaettirs on one side of you, so they don’t trap you. Cast Glyph of Swiftness immediately after Stoneflesh Aura (Click 4 on your keyboard while Stoneflesh Aura is casting). Keep in motion as much as possible, gathering Vaettirs, until Obsidian Flesh recharges. Cast Obsidian Flesh, and if necessary, gather the rest of the 36 Vaettirs. This process will be repeated on the left side after you finish killing this mob gathered around you.

Killing the Vaettirs

Now you are a lvl 20 Elementalist surrounded by as many as 36 lvl 26 Mesmers, but there is no need to panic. If you prepared correctly, and are remembering to maintain your enchantments and stances, you have 100% health and energy. Make sure that whenever you cast Obsidian Flesh, you have Glyph of Swiftness on yourself. Maintain Obsidian Flesh, Stoneflesh Aura, and Mantra of Earth at all times; Obsidian Flesh prevents the Vaettirs from casting their nasty degeneration hexes on you; Stoneflesh Aura prevents damage from their base attacks; Mantra of Earth provides you with a constant stream of near-infinite energy. To damage the Vaettirs, cast in the order: Arcane Echo, Teinai’s Crystals, Echoed Teinai’s Crystals, Crystal Wave. When you have killed all of the Vaettirs, zone into Bjora Marches, then zone back into Jaga Moraine. Rinse and repeat.

Counters

The only real way that this build can be messed up is by human error. If you die by forgetting to recast Stoneflesh Aura or Obsidian Flesh, simply run back and try again. Your DP will be cleared in moments. In most cases, forgetting Stoneflesh Aura for a second is more lethal; you will be dead almost immediately. If Obsidian Flesh goes down for a second, the Vaettirs will hex you with Images of Remorse and Conjure Phantasm. You can easily survive this, but I have found that if I start degenerating health (or, completely off topic, forget to cast Mantra of Earth and have my energy drop), the Vaettirs will scatter. This is probably some weird AI programming problem, but it slows down our run sometimes. If Obsidian Flesh is down for an extended period of time, you will be killed by Accumulated Pain.
This is an image of the weird effect that degeneration has on your agro holding abilities:

Conclusion

Thanks to all of my guildies who put up with my ranting about drop rates in A-Chat, and to A-net for making such an easy and profitable farm (and I guess GW isn’t that bad of an accomplishment either) Thanks to you for reading through my first guide.

Its nice looking, well explained but I thought there already was a guide on this?

nevertheless, good job, you put some effort in it and im sure people that still play GW will find it usefull :P

  Paramounts_of_Odin on 02/24/08 12:28

I like it Bo. I like it a lot. If you are looking to improve in the future, I find guides to be more pleasurable with a screenshot of the loot, it just kinda gives me ambition to do the farm. I was also wondering is it really faster echo-crystals vs. sliver? And what is the point in HM, do you get more Glacial Stones in HM than NM? Just some things I would like cleared up. And absolutely wonderful job, thank you for your contribution!

awsome guide bo :D

just a few quick pointers. if you take sliver over teinais, and echo sliver, your drop rate is a lot better. Well, so i find. The point of the farm is to get all the foes on as low as health as possible by using crystals, then sliver to kill them 1 by 1. i have done both farms, the crystals/teinais version, and the sliver, and i found the sliver to be better.

the other thing is djins is only 25% now instead of 33%, but still worth taking instead of doing the slow running.

but other than that, a great guide mate :)

Thanks for the comments everyone!

There were already 2 guides, but each described an outdated build, using a slower and riskier run path through Jaga Moraine, not Bjora Marches.

It is definitely much faster to go Crystal Wave + Teinai's rather than Sliver Armor.
In HM, there are more Vaettirs, and you get more/better gold drops, but you get the same amount of stones on average.

I too have done both variations, but I prefer the crystal version because
A) Even though on average I get less stones per run, I get more runs in, and therefore more stones per hour.
B) It take several casts of sliver to take em all down because it only does 7 damage, and instead of waiting for all of those recharges, I could just hit Crystal Wave once.
C) I like watching em all pop at the same time :)

hey.. great guide.. i believe there was another one just like it a while ago.. but it didn't include anything to do with the running skill.. i just wanted to say.. a plus 19% or 18% ench staff mod will work just as well..it does for me.

  bo fairfieild on 02/24/08 15:33

freaking no edit button...
I just realized that the typed out version of the skills formats weird if you have a small screen, overflowing the right column and making skills 7 and 8 annoying to read.
sorry!

It does, in the section entitled "Running to Jaga Moraine".

also- the BBcode got screwed up in the "Killing the Vaettirs" section... could a mod kindly fix that :) thanks

Mithros the Rose on 02/25/08 00:14

I like this build better than the earlier guide that was posted, good job! Note that beyond watching all baddies pop at once, I believe many more golds are dropped than if you kill the mobs singly. For those of us who don't like the gloves and are too lazy to sell...golds are key!

Mithros the Rose on 02/25/08 00:17

Again, curse the lack of edit button, but if anyone ever needs a demonstration run, you can PM me ingame and I'll take you along on a run. Good luck out there!

Fixed it I think... ^_^ (if you meant the [b] thing)

Don't think that GA has a BBcode though, I've never tried it out myself.
The guide was just looking so nice, we had no choice but to approve it. keep on writing ^_^

Not true one guide does include the run you have posted.

  Cross on 02/25/08 19:09

I do like some of the others say and use sliver but I use all the same skills you have listed except the running skill cause I just figure your only running there once why worry with a spot for that when I can take another damage skill so I can cast the others to get their health low and then cast Arcane echo then sliver and its still fast and still plenty drops. But none the less its all personal preference and still a very nice guide.

  Riotpoll on 02/26/08 05:57

A nicely presented guide but nearly identical to my guide here.
I suggested Arcane Echo in the guide itself and Storm Djinn's later in the comments section.

  johny bravo on 02/26/08 07:27

Nice guide. I have done this for quite some time to get golds (although the raptor farm at the right times nets better gold drops) and so far I am at a little over 1200 ID'd.

As for the different skills I like to run this with sliver armor instead of the running skills becuase I cast like this

Echo + Sliver
I then use GoS with one of the AoE spells to increase the recharge allowing for a faster cast.

Doing it this way leave you with only a couple second of down time on Sliver plus good recharge times on you AoE.

In HM with all those guys hitting you they drop pretty quickly, especially with the help of the AoE.

I was going to comment on you lack of armor of earth but I noticed the shield and that makes ups up for that good idea.

I knew I had seen this before.

Nice guide, is there a merchant out there somewhere?
So much stuff you can't pick up for lack of room after only a couple of runs!

  bo fairfieild on 04/13/08 12:28

There is not a merchant out there, but what I do is simply not pick up some of the white/blue non-max drops. Or, if you need materials, salvage your blues/whites on the spot.

awesome guide, simple and effective:P
