Guide: How to Monk in Random Arena’s by Hardstrike.
What is Random Arenas (RA):
Random Arenas is a form of PvP, you fight rounds in teams of 4 versus 4. Teams are completely random as the arena name says. So everyone has an equal chance of getting in a good team or a bad team. There are various kinds of maps in RA, every ‘region’ in Guild Wars has its own arena, for example the Ascalon arena, Northern Shiverpeaks, Krytan but also the Shing Jea arena from factions or the Sunspear arena from Nightfall.
The 3 Game types:
there are 3 game types you may encounter in RA.
1) Annihilation
2) Priest Annihilation
3) Kill count
Annihilation:
The Annihilation game type is basically the last team standing wins. In other words. Kill before you get killed, or the surviving team wins. So try to wipe your opponents before they wipe you.
Priest Annihilation:
Priest Annihilation goes the same as Annihilation but there is only one extra thing. Each team has a Priest with a resurrection shrine. Fallen party members get Resurrected at each 2 minute count (at 2 minutes, 4 minutes, 6 etc) To win this game you have to kill all opponents and their priest before they resurrect.
Kill count:
In this game type its all about killing. The team with the most kills before the time runs out wins. People get resurrected every 30 seconds at the nearest res shrine.
Gladiator title:
In random arenas you may gain points towards the gladiator title track, better known as ‘Glad points’ . with 100 gladiator points you will earn the first rank in this title track, 200 for the next, and for the others, take a look at the Guild Wiki page for it.
Glad points are rewarded for winning streaks in RA, for each 5 wins in a row you gain a glad point plus 1 glad point for each 5 wins you had. So 5 wins is 1 glad point. 10 wins is 1+1 glad point, 15 wins is 1+2, and 20 wins is 1+3. After the 20th win you gain 4 points for each additional 5 wins. So 4 points for 25 wins, for 30 etc.
Gladiator titles show you have spent time in PvP and mostly shows you know how it works. Getting this title may help you get in some PvP oriented guilds. (I say MAY, it depends on the guild) So it ain't bad to get it.
The teams:
Random Arena teams consist of 4 people. Because the selection is completely random you can’t choose the party members so you can’t know what your team builds are. Therefore its useful either to be monk, to be sure you got some healing in your team, or take self heals and defensive skills to increase your chance of survival when there ain't a healer around.
Going monk is In my opinion (IMO) the best choice, because it ain't hard to get a team that does enough damage to kill others. As long you can keep them alive you will be able to win some rounds.

Also there are a few optional skill changes which I sometimes use.
Change Return for Res sig or mending touch. both work ok. but ONLY res when there is no need for a heal. You can't stop healing for 3 seconds, better let someone stay dead instead of resing and let someone else die.
How to use it:
Pre-cast Holy Veil on yourself before the battle starts. It’s a good hex defense.
Cast Guardian when you see a melee foe or ranger charging in on you.
Use dismiss condition to remove conditions of course.
Use Word of Healing when your health drops below 50%
Use Signet of Rejuvenation on attacking team members or when dazed.
Use Dark Escape to run kite, and take less damage in critical situations
Cast return to get away from melee.
Use Protective Spirit if you are hexed with backfire, or got many elementalists attacking you.
More on this later in the guide.
Tactics: What to do in which situation.
Start of the battle:
Check what your team is made of, ask them to ping the builds so you are aware of what your team can do and if people have some self-heal or defensive skills.
Also pre-cast Holy Veil on yourself.
Opening of the gate, meeting the enemy.
press control with finger 1 and click with right hand on the names to check what professions your foes are. And if they are casting any enchantments or preparations. (like Poison Arrows on a ranger)
Situation depending:
1) If you see many melee watch their movements, if they are rushing towards you cast guardian on yourself and start kiting, do not wait! Every second a warrior is running he is useless. So it’s a great defense.
For an example picture of a warrior charging on you click HERE As you can see I already targeted myself in the partylist, ready to cast guardian.
2) If you see many casters, for example elementalists. Check what they are casting and on who, mostly its useful to cast Protective Spirit on the team member that gets struck first. That will take the pressure away and gives your team time to strike back.
3) If you see no necromancers or mesmers its very unlikely there will be hexes, remove holy veil from yourself for an additional pip of energy regen.
The Fight:
Let your team target mesmers first, they are your biggest danger. If there aren’t any then pick their monks. You should kite as much as you can when you got melee foes after you. Keep guardian up when needed. And dark escape when knocked down and when you need some damage reduction.
Cast Signet on Rejuvenation on sins/warriors/dervs and rangers, when attacking it heals them nearly as much as WoH does and it costs no energy. Use it whenever you can.
Keep on kiting melee professions, because as said before, a walking warrior/sin is a useless one. they can't inflict damage then. Use Return whenever you can. it will make their job way harder.
Finger Placement:
Numbering the fingers:
While going in the battle and kiting:
While healing and not kiting
this makes you use your skills very useful, and prevents you from moving your mouse too much.
Select party members on the party list with your mouse and hit a number (1/2/3/4) and take next person if needed. You can move your fingers across the line but let all 3 stick together and be sure which finger is on which button. If you got the hang on this method it makes healing very much easier.
Things you need to pay attention on as a monk:
As a monk you need to pay attention to a few things.
The most important ones are the health of your team, and the amount of conditions and hexes there is on them. Make sure you know which hex and which condition needs to be removed first. (take out deep wound and dazed before removing things like bleeding or poisoned from other party members)
Besides that try to follow foes and see what skills they use, so you can think of a counter or weak spot in their builds. When you found a weak spot, ping the foe on time and let your party take him down.
Also make sure your team stays together, in your earshot. So you don’t have to move around to heal each party member.
Tips and hints:
Make sure to use more weapon sets,
1) Staff with +30 +30 hp.
2) Wand/offhand with Halves skill recharge and one +30hp mod.
3) One set with one +15 energy/ -1 regen weapons.
4) One set with two +15 energy/ -1 regen weapons
Use set 2 standard, swap to 1 when you need health and 3 or 4 if you lack energy.
Another hint is to take survivor insignias and put your health on 600. No more or less. That makes using Word of Healing on yourself a lot easier. You just have to watch the first number, if it’s a 2 WoH yourself. Otherwise wait for your health to drop below 300 and hit it. This tactic has 2 advantages. It heals you for way more health, and the time you are waiting makes you regen a bit more energy which might be vital to survive.
When its all going good you might end up like this ;)
Example win streak
Afterword:
I hope I explained this build good enough and how to use it.
Sorry if its too much plain text and few pictures. but its hard to screen everything. If you read it you should be able to know what I mean.
If you have any problesm running it (problems with the build, not your RA teams) feel free to ask/post them. Positive comments are good as well ;)
