Primary
Recommended Party
Master of Whispers – If you have mesmer interrupts unlocked, make him a N/Me, max domination magic and soul reaping, and just load him up with as many interrupts as you have, with Power Block as the ideal elite skill. If you can’t do this, just set him as an MM.
Acolyte Jin – Give her Broadhead Arrow if you have it, this is the ideal skill for this mission, as it will completely shut down the Drought. Also consider giving her Winter, as this will negate the effect of Thirst of the Drought
Zhed Shadowhoof – Your typical Searing Flames nuker, or just a high damage nuker of any kind will do
Mhenlo
Khim
Odurra
Herta
If you chose Acolyte Sousuke instead of Jin, which I highly recommend you do, you’d probably be best suited taking Tahlkora as a protection monk. If you do this, you might want to consider bringing an interrupt or three yourself.
The hardest part about this mission is facing the Drought at the end. But one must start at the beginning, so we will get to that in due time. When you first spawn, you will see this lovely lady waiting for you with a nice exclamation point above her head to let you know to talk to her:
This is Dehjah, the protector of the river that the Drought is destroying. She is truly a water Djinn disguised in human form. For the beginning of the mission just follow her and make sure she doesn’t die. Like most NPC’s that have to stay alive (i.e. Rurik) she likes to rush ahead, so you’ll have to keep up. Thankfully, she’s not entirely weak, so you have a few seconds to catch up, usually. If you stay with her your monks should have no trouble keeping her alive. She will stop at the entrance to the waterworks and tell you to go on without her.
If you noticed when you spawned you will be dealing with a certain nasty condition known as Thirst of the Drought:
If you look at the map, you will see five red flags, each one marks the position of a pump guarded by three Droughtlings. These Droughtlings, like the Drought, are earth elementalists, so they can hurt pretty badly with this condition. If you insist on making your battle with the Drought as easy as possible, you have to kill all of these groups to shut down each pump. Shutting down a pump will decrease the effect by 10% and give you a 2% moral boost, so when you have them all shut down you won’t have to worry about Thirst of the Drought anymore.
The enemies you will be fighting are Kournans and the Droughtlings. These should pose no real threat to your party, so just go through the waterworks to each pump, killing as you go and deactivating the pumps. There are two gates at which an Agent of Whispers is posted, who will let you through.
When you get to the Drought’s chamber, there are several groups of Droughtings around, most of which can be pulled and killed separately, all but the two right near him. Once you have cleared the surrounding area, aggro the drought, and make sure you call him as your target, so all your hench focus fire on him. If you have the recommended team setup, Master of Whispers and Jin should completely shut him down and you should have no problems. If you have an interrupt yourself, watch for Sandstorm, this is his most dangerous skill, and interrupt it when you see it. He should go down quickly enough, provided he doesn’t manage to spike your whole party to death. It would be a good idea to flag each of your heroes and your hench to different locations, so his AoE doesn’t take out the whole team at once. Once you have killed him, the cutscene will not start until you have killed the two Droughtlings with him, so this gives you time to capture Sandstorm if you are so inclined.
Upon completing this mission you will find yourself in Moddok Crevice.
Bonus
To be completely honest, I find the bonus of this mission to be significantly faster, and not really all that more difficult. Follow Dehjah to the waterworks as normal, and once inside just make your way straight to the Agent of Whispers at the gate. He will let you through, and you can avoid killing all the kournans and droughtlings at the pumps. Continue on into the Drought’s chamber, and proceed as normal, pulling the Droughtlings that are in the way to you and killing them. With the full force of Thirst of the Drought on you, the Drought is even more dangerous, quite obviously. This is why Winter is so helpful, because even without the bonus it will make the effect useless. Consider giving this to another hero as secondary ranger, though in all honesty, you don’t need it if you have a Broadhead Arrow ranger and Master of Whispers set up to interrupt.
You certainly want to tell your heroes and hench to spread out here, so flag them to various locations around you so they aren’t adjacent to each other and you should be fine. Someone is likely to die, but it shouldn’t make a difference. Focus all fire on the drought and he should die relatively quickly.
Skill Captures
Sandstorm (elementalist) from The Drought
