Hi, this is my first guide and I hope you all like it.

This build is all about making sure casters have almost no chance to cast their spells against you or your group.

The Build

The Attributes

Equipment

Weapons

Targets
Monks, Necromancers, Elementalists, and Mesmers are the ones you should find. One, these are casters you're supposed to stop. Two, they have the lowest max armors in the whole game, so they're easy prey.

How This Build Works

Before going into combat with anyone, be sure to activate Read the Wind. Your primary target should be finding casters. Casters that are seperated from their group would be very easy for you.

Quickly use Pin Down to make sure they can't escape from you. They'll be very likely to start casting short cast time spells against you such as Flare, Vampiric Gaze, and Conjure Phantasm. Once you've used this build for a long enough time, you know by instinct when to start interrupting them. --Early on, you will likely die and maybe not interrupt them at all.-- Once they start casting spells that take 2 seconds or more, it'll be really easy to finish them off. You have to chain each attack together like assassins. Immediately use Savage Shotonce Punishing Shot hits and use Distracting Shot once Savage Shot hits. This will reduce up to half their health and they'll attempt to run. By the time this happens, Pin Down would have been recharged with one second cripple time left on them, use it immediately and prevent them from running. Punishing Shot and Savage Shot will be recharged and then use them again, this time just use it, interrupting will not be an issue this time around. Depending on if you're lucky enough to hit critically, your target will be defeated. If not, another one or two normal hits will finish them.

With A Group
When PvPing, you should stay in a group or join other groups while in battle. Your role will act as support and you have to be the one calling the target. Your prime target will be Monk => MM => Eles => Mesmers => other casters. Once you've taken out the Monk, they'll have no healing and the rest of the group will crumble quickly. Minions will attack randomly once the master is defeated which could help your party. Once the ele is gone, there will be no nuking like Meteor Shower and Sandstorm. Taking out Mesmers will get rid of the energy denial and no more self-inflicting damage.

The Counters
Warriors: Due to their high armor levels, they should NOT be one of your targets. Warriors will likely attack you when they see you by yourself. If this happens, run to your allies.

Assassin: Though they have low armor levels, their skill chaining will be very devastating to you. Most assassins still use the Horn of Ox/Falling Spider build which will cause poison, Bleeding, and Deep Wound. Some assassins also throw crippling in so they'll defeat you in a few seconds. That's why I put Mending Touch in. If you see a Sin running towards you, use Whirling Defense and like Warriors run to your allies. If they DO hit you with crippling, quickly use Mending Touch and run.

Dervish: Like Sins, they have low armor points, but they are powerful spikers and they have powerful health regen. This doesn't mean they can't be defeated. When you're familiar with the build, you can stop their attacks. Dervishes with Mystic Regeneration will be a tough fight, so when those appear, use your best judgement.

Other Rangers: They are defeatable. When the opposing ranger use Whirling Defense, use it too. The time will be around the same, so after it ends, you can defeat them quickly.

Other Interesting Notes
***Punishing Shot and Savage Shot are a powerful spike. I've done up to 120dmg with Punishing Shot and 80dmg with Savage Shot.
***When confronting other rangers with the same build, let them use the skills first OR use it before them so you can interrupt their shots
***Energy Denial will not be a problem for you, since the expertise will shrink the energy cost down to around 3 or 4.

Since this is my first guide, please give some constructive critism so I can improve on future guides and I hope all of you like it. :D

lol u caught me

Very similiar to a build I use, only real difference is I have Broad Head Arrow instead of Punishing Shot. Have to try it myself though. Great guide!

  Pickletron on 03/02/07 20:01

I'd rather have the pig than the bone dragon :P
Nice guide although Punishing Shot isn't the best elite you could have used for pure interrupting :)

  Senbonzakura on 03/02/07 20:28

well since the build doesn't have an attack skill, Punishing Shot does around the same damage as Penetrating Shot

  GW_Ranger on 03/02/07 20:40

I remember a very similar build used to be insanely popular in RA before A-Net put in after-fire delays on interupts. Regardless its a nice build and Mending Touch is a nice addition.

A note on fighting Sins. Since almost all of them will use one of the various shadowsteps to get to you, probably Dark Prison or Shadow Prison(both combine a snare with shadowstepping), its fairly easy to spot the combo coming. You may or may not interupt the first attack, but the second one is relatively easy to interupt since you know that one's coming. Once their attack chain is broken(Distracting Shot is great for keeping it broken) they generally run away or die soon enough.

  KaiSwiftblade on 03/02/07 21:37

CLASSIC 3x interrupt build, and still very strong. I'm glad someone decided to dedicate a whole guide to it.

Mending Touch is a nice add-in to the original, although I think Pin Down is a bit much with Read the Wind. Personally, I think I would substitute either:

Throw Dirt --> Pin Down
Seeking Arrows --> Read the Wind

And how is Magebane Shot [NF Elite, Interrupt]? I haven't had a chance to cap it, but it appears that it may be the new elite instead of Punishing.

Well, anyway, great build to work with, and a well planned out guide. I dig the colors and pics. GJ all around.

  rebellion on 03/03/07 04:04

Nice guide with plenty of pics.
Dont use a longbow or flatbow you would be better off using a shortbow to get a faster attack speed and with Read the wind the arrows should hit most of the time.

Also..

Once you've taken out the Monk, they'll have no healing and the rest of the group will crumble quickly.

This is not the case because people will try to rez the monk so the builds next job would be to interupt enemy rez sigs to give your teammates enough time to kill the rest of the team off.

And if you swapped the weapons you have for a recurve bow then you could swap Read the wind for a different skill such as rez sig.

  Grimgram on 03/03/07 15:51

yeah but with a shortbow you whuld haveto be in the action and cant stand on the outside and interrupt while you comrades are pawning away at whatever, make urself less of a target and use a long/flat bow

  rebellion on 03/03/07 16:34

Rangers arnt usually the first on a persons list to kill unless you are with a full team of warriors. A long/flat bow would only be needed if the target tries to run away but that problem is solved in the build anyway.
Also if the ranger is targeted then whirling def will probably make the attackers change targets anyway. Also the closer you are to the target the easier it is to interupt them.

Outlaw Of Blades on 03/04/07 00:37

Wait, wait. Weakness is Assassin????? How is that possible. Assassins require hitting every time for combos to work. An interupt ranger can first of all easily distracting shot lead attack, rending assassin useless. If that fails whirling def ftw?

  eiirish on 03/04/07 06:37

*side tips*

Put your major vigor on another piece, not head :-P, You may have to swap the head piece sometimes and then you wont have your vigor rune

A few changes you could make.  Windbringer Rawrzor on 03/04/07 08:16

Drop whirling defence for natural stride. As stride gives a speed boost even tho it can be removed. Drop your protection prayers down to 0 or just spare attributes as mending touch is for conition removal not healing really. If keeping pin down cahnge RTW for apply poison to give a cover condition... Or drop pin down for a res.

  aznese guy on 03/04/07 12:02

well IMO the best bow for this is a recurve bow because it is slower than the shortbow but faster than the others and it's range is longer than the shortbow so you're not in the fray of the battle. I love this ranger, i just use my variant with the 3 interrupt skills. Nice written guide and i love the colors!

  Survivingsin on 03/04/07 17:48

Very good build, mostly because it is very balanced and can survive against almost anything (sin comes in, u interupt him, ele casts, u interupt, war comes to hack away, put on whirling, someone blinds u, take it off) just idk if it could actually.....kill anything

  bowtie2440 on 03/05/07 12:29

id love to try this build but the boss for Punishing Shot he never spawns or im missing him some how :(

somewhat agree, tho I really dislike flat and longbows, if you can keep read the wind up, then likely the bes choice is flat, it's refire rate will allow you to interrupt easier. Short bow is possibly a little too close ... you would be interrupting casters, and likely very close to any melee types

  darkdragon1564 on 03/06/07 14:24

The Build isnt bad in general..cept for the lack of rez sig..

also 1 more thing

sunder on a ranger..eww

Nice Guide I personally would prefer incinidery arrows over punishing shot as incinidery intterupts with EVERY shot and lites on fire PWNAGE combo to get some major degen goin. I would go R/ME for conjure phantasm + incinidery = Intterupt + degen.

JUst some suggestions

  Basikk on 06/11/07 14:42

nice build although i think disrupting arrows works better than read the wind, it lasts longer and more interrupting
