Well to start this out I hope this is most helpful! I enjoy switching pets, as much as i enjoy switching my outfits! But i have never found an in-depth guide that shows me Where to go to find them! (other then an area name)
So i have made my own personal dream guide. a Map per pet, pictures, and a movie showing you how to get to most locations.
I will be showing you where to find EVERY CAPTURABLE kind of pet in nightfall (sorry, no Hippo's)
When looking for pets remember to hold down your alt key. Your alt key will make the animals name your trying to capture appear green.
On the maps provided below. The pink areas (they're usually semicircular) are the areas you will be looking at WHILE holding down alt. Animals do not always spawn in the same locations but are usually near the pink areas i have provided for you :)
the White underlined text are the towns name in which i suggest you leave from to capture your pets. The other color text are the Area's you will be exploring for your desired pet!
For the flamingo i suggest leaving from The Astralarium rather then The sunspear great hall (it is MUCH closer)
[edit] The Sunspear Great Hall should be underlined, it is the town you will be leaving from to capture the warthog.
The crocodile did not make it into my movie but this map should be clear enough to follow ^.^
the jahai rat also did not make it into the movie, but is the easiest to find.
These are the easiest lions to find of both the male and female species. (you can only capture them before taking the quest from The Great Zehtuka)
Another optional spot.. though tricky-er to get a lioness is in the picture below.
Same for the lion in this next picture.
Finally the hyena! This is my favorite spawn to find them at ^.^
