Soloing The Underworld After the ‘Nerf’ with your Monk!

My first guide : ) Enjoy

By now, most of you are probably aware of the ’55’ concept. Lowering your health as much as possible in order to take less damage after the monk spell – Protective Spirit.

I’ve found a way to farm the Underworld all alone with your monk:

The build, attributes and the equipment:

The skills, from right to left, are:
Protective Spirit
Shield Of Absorption
Sympathetic Visage
Ancestor’s Visage
Illusionary Weaponry [E]
Power Return
Blessed Aura
Balthazar’s Spirit

Personally, I use monk tattoos for the additional energy, but any armour is fine, as long as you have 5 superior monk runes, and a Defenders Head Tattoo (+1 Protection)

The scythe is vital. And a grip of enchanting is really worth investing in, else there is a long gap between casting Shield of Absorption.

I also have a max damage wand, to kill Dying Nightmares with (more later)

Tactic:

Enter the Underworld by going to a Statue of Grenth in Temple of Ages (Prophecies), Zin Ku Corridor (Factions) or Chantry of Secrets (Nightfall).

Kneel by the statue and talk to the voice of Grenth, pay the 1k entrance fee.

Cast spells 7 & 8 and wait for some energy Regeneration.

Bladed Aatxes:

These are fairly straight forward. Keep up Protective Sprit, Shield of Absorption, Illusionary Weaponry and one of the two visages at all times.

Swing away! With your scythe you can attack 3 enemies around you, and Aatxes are usually in groups of 3... Perfect.

Dying Nightmares:

These were put in the Underworld to stop people soloing it, but that’s not a problem. As soon as one pops up, target it, when it starts casting Rend Enchantments, use 6 – Power Return. This will interrupt it, and then switch to the wand I talked about earlier and wand it to death, it only takes 2-3 shots.

Once you have cleared the chamber of Aatxes, take the quest.

Grasping Darkness:

These are easy. But there is 1 thing to remember. Before you aggro a group, put up Protective Spirit, one of your Visages and Shield of Absorption (in that order).

Don’t cast any spells that take more than 1 second to cast in the beginning, because they will interrupt it, after a few seconds, recast Shield of Absorption and use Illusionary Weaponry and swing away. Much the same as Aatxes, but make sure one of the Visages is always up, else they will interrupt you and drain your energy.

Smite Crawlers:

Do the same as Grasping Darkness, as soon as they attack you they will lose energy and lose the ability to heal

Coldfire Nights:

I’m afraid I haven’t killed these yet. They slow you down, interrupt you and are generally a nuisance. Also, the Visages don’t work, as they use ranged attacks. Killing them is pretty much sompletely impossible unless you pull Smites to trigger Visage.

A run to clear the Aatxes, Grasping and Smite Crawlers usually takes 20 mins –30 mins, depending how picky you are and how far into the UW you go.

Advantages:

Easy to use.
It works (I promise!)
Skills are easy to acquire
The drops can be awesome
A lot of exp fairly quickly

Disadvantages:

All of the creatures are above level 20, and so some have a lot of health and die slowly
Miss timing Shield of Absorption can be fatal
If you don’t notice a Dying Nightmare, or 2 spawn at once… You’re dead

  Iccold on 01/03/07 19:42

Really nice guide well put together might have to try it sometime

  rareorwelldone on 01/03/07 20:16

was a really nice guide, easy to understand. I never would have thought of scythe+IW, but Im sure others have, and thats very cool.

  Pickletron on 01/03/07 20:23

Would the pre-order scythe work too? it has 20% enchanting :D

the sg of death on 01/03/07 20:55

lol iv been using this build for awhile, and a simple modification of it will also let you solo almost all of FoW.

  Bubbada Muse on 01/03/07 21:45

well since it woulndt be worth writing another guide it you use basically the same skills set why not enlighten us on the simple modification that lets you solo fow =) . as he stated you dont need 20% enchanting but any scythe with the mod will help give SoA and PS more time and give you a better chance of not dieing because you didnt recast fast enough.

  HiroAyami on 01/03/07 23:55

Very nice, I've been wondering how to use a Scythe in UW for a while, tried it with a mesmer, but I didn't counter everything, just Aatxes were do-able :O

Anyways, cool stuff, I like :)

  Unholy_Sinister on 01/04/07 01:16

Just finished doing like 5 runs in UW with this build, works like a charm, great job, and ty for posting!

PS: 1 run gave me 6 ectos, thanks for that too.

  mango_monger on 01/04/07 02:19

hey i thought that soa only absorbed 5 dmg each hit???

well from that i think i am going to try this now

  a_bit_thick on 01/04/07 02:50

um just wondering do u need max armor or any armor rating

  dikke hamster on 01/04/07 03:08

Do you need a 20%enchantment mod for the scythe, I can't find one, and farming that greenie that that Avatar of Dwayna boss drops, pfff

  lunaticmo1 on 01/04/07 03:50

Build works really well, though u have too make sure they are all together, or u will only hit 1-2 Attaxs, other than that, great guide, got me some ectos already, gj mate

  sethellington on 01/04/07 04:17

Well it seems to be working for most of you, that's good.

QUOTE

I use Tattoos from Lion's Arch, becase you'll only be taking 0-5 damage after prot spirit anyway

QUOTE

Before I posted this guide, I tried it with a candy cane scythe, just as a test... and every 10 secs I had to run away because there was 1-2 secs between SoA, and like I said, miss timing SoA is fatal. So yes, you need enchanting, I'm not sure if it has to be 20% though.

  The Sister on 01/04/07 04:39

Nice one, preorder scythe ftw!

  Blazings on 01/04/07 04:41

My monk just got on fire islands, and I think I'll make him a 55 after I've beaten the game, or bought new armor (but for that I need to get into Cantha cus they have the nicest armor =P).
Must try this sometimes, looks very promising ^^

Oh ye, I realy love your avatar =]

-Blazings

  zeramoth on 01/04/07 04:48

nice, i have been using this build for awhile, aatxes are pretty slow, this works much better in fow, just take ignorance instead of power return

  senchu on 01/04/07 05:58

look promissing thanks
now the only thing left for me to do is get my monk to lvl 20, buy factions, nightfall and cap a leet ^^

  bowtie2440 on 01/04/07 06:08

oh can it be............ a build to make my monk come out of the guild hall and not be the third mule :) ....... Ill give it a shot Hi Ho Hi Off To UW I Go lol

QUOTE

Well having said that, you can make a variation with Healing Breeze instead of SoA, which also means you can get rid of Blessed Aura.

All the other skills, except power return, are prophecies or core, and you can just use a different interrupt, or even 2 if you're not using Blessed Aura.

  Keo on 01/04/07 06:48

Deff faster than using IW with a sword but 30 mins for a UW run still seems painfully slow! How long does it take to cut down the Aataxs'? How many IW's?

QUOTE

It does, but with Prot Spirit you're only taking 5 damage per hit so you end up blocking that resulting in zero damage.

If you don't have NF take HB instead of SoA, imo this is a dodgy skill to use since it leaves you open for a few secs of cooldown. You can also replace Power Return with Leech Sig as long as you're prepared to wait on the cooldown for that as well.

GJ, Nice build!

^_^

  sethellington on 01/04/07 06:53

QUOTE

with blessed aura and a 20% enchanting scythe you can keep it up indefinitely.

And taking down Aatxes is not as slow as you might think. And Vengeful farming is faster for smites, but not by a lot (34 dmg vs 37) and Vengeful can't take on Aatxes, which have twice the ecto drop rate as Smites

  dikke hamster on 01/04/07 08:20

Anyone selling 20%enchant mod for scythe?
or a greenie?:)

  sethellington on 01/04/07 08:41

:P That's what I was saying 4 days ago. I managed to pick up the scythe grip for 8k, which is cheap, it's usually about twice that. The +5 energy scythe is perfect for the job, which I got from a collector in Nightfall, somewhere in Vabia

  whacky on 01/04/07 10:39

Nice build, have to try it out.

QUOTE

U get the Scythe in Vehjin Mines, just above the middle on the map. U need 5 behemoth hides for it.

  Zollie on 01/04/07 11:34

I just don't understand it. You have 105 hp cos a scythe is 2 handed. Prot spirit makes all damage 10. SoA absorbs 5 damage. Then you STILL GET 5 DAMAGE!! How come you do not die?!

  Zollie on 01/04/07 11:39

Oh I have a suggestion: Divine Favor heals you, right?
That's shame cos I thought I can do it on my Mesmer as well.

  sethellington on 01/04/07 12:13

you can use a mes, it's faster but a little more dangerous.

And the damage reduction from SoA is cumulative

This means that every time you take damage it is reduced by 5 more than before

reduced by 5 on 1st hit, 10 on second, 15 on third etc etc so after 1 hit you take 0 damage

hope that clears it for you

  Rogue on 01/04/07 14:44

what's the time?

  Master Bock on 01/04/07 16:20

has anyone tried this reversed? me/mo i know its possible but i was wondering if i should buy my monk the runes or go for the cheaper mesmer runes?

  polishrocker on 01/04/07 16:54

MAn, I was planning on making a mesmer to do stuff like this with a modded rit solo build on mes w/ illusionary weaponry. I REALLY like this build. Sux i dont got a monk. Eh, my warr can do aatxe pretty fast (build has similar concept to this, have fun figuring it out.
)

  Abdhul Molajamed on 01/04/07 16:59

We all know that enemies recognize cyclone axe as AoE dmg, which annihalated my warrior farm build, but do enemies treat scythes as AoE dmamage?

No, Scytches dont trigger AoE damage :)

  psychobunny on 01/04/07 17:07

It's not AoE damage that makes them run. If they are low on health, are not being attacked and there are three or more other monsters, they will run away to regen even if you don't use AoE damage of any kind.

nope why would everyone spend 1k goin from ToA? :O

  Keo on 01/04/07 21:58

I've tried it with my preorder scythe and I like it but I do have a few queries...

1: Bleeding from the Aataxs Riposte...how do you deal with that? Just wait for it to wear off?
2: The 4th squid who wonders off to regen enough for a skull crack or interrupt. (And btw ANet - Grasps being able to interrupt SoA..1/4 sec cast...isn't cool!)
3: The Smites breaking agro and healing each other. I hammered away at a mob of 5 who just wouldn't die because they help each other out.

I fell asleep, forgot SoA and finally died...it is 4am here.

Healing Breeze doesn't work in place of SoA, I tried in Elona and it can't regen you enough. I still think SoA is a little sketchy but then so is being a 55!

Anyway, GJ, nice build. If you could get cred for builds you'd be gettin loads!!

^_^

Vlad Teh Impaler on 01/05/07 01:35

Answer to 1: Divine favor can cover the healing fairly easily until the bleeding ends.

I've never had 2 happen, the squids always stick around

But i am definetly having problems with 3. The smites all run away and heal up. And then set up wicked 3 man bodyblocks on me so i get owned.

  sethellington on 01/05/07 04:15

QUOTE

i had this problem for a little bit. But they tend to run if you move. If you stay a while, don't move and keep doing your thing, the AI will realise they are going to die and stop healing.

QUOTE

Yeah, I haven't ever had SoA interrupted but I know they can

Read the guide, you must have up Visage, that makes them lose energy and adrenaline. (Skull crack is adrenaline)

Finally, little tip, should have added this really... Practice on the Jade Brotherhood Knights outside Marketplace. They spawn in groups of 3, and without soa or prot spirit can kill you in 1-2 hits. try them
