Lyssa’s Marksman
Dervish/Ranger
Here’s yet another one of my “detailed” builds, this time focusing on the Nightfall class, Dervish and the not so commonly used Avatar Elite, Avatar of Lyssa and secondary class, Ranger.
Required Skills and Attributes:

Armor and Runes:
Max Armor, Insignias can easily be completely up to you, though plus energy is fairly useless to the build, of course have a hood that boosts your mysticism attribute by 1.
1x Minor – Superior Vigor
1x Major Mysticism
1x Runes of Vitae
Build Uses and How to Play:
While on first glance the build seems to lack any sort of fire power to it due to the lack of attack skills, however once you enter battle you’ll find it quite useful and should enjoy the damage you’ll be dealing. This build is heavily reliant on its Elite, Avatar of Lyssa for damage, capitalizing on its increased damage while the enemy is activating a skill, for that reason you’ll want to target classes that utilize their skills more such as enemy Monks, Mesmers and Elementalists.
Initially the build focuses on being a long ranged sniper, utilizing a longbow or recurve bow, though a short bow can be useful, I find it unnecessary. Prior to entering battle activate Avatar of Lyssa, Read the Wind, and then Heart of Fury in that order, pick your caster and fire away. During the battle be sure to maintain Read the Wind and keep Heart of Fury up as often as possible, this greatly increases your damage and chance to trigger Avatar of Lyssa’s increased damage effect. Be sure to utilize your Savage Shot on enemy skills that could be potentially damaging to your group, AoE, etc. Continue this until Avatar of Lyssa ends, or you’re left with only melee based enemies as targets, once this happens your preparation skill changes from Read the Wind to Apply Poison, though still keeping Heart of Fury active whenever possible. Even if Avatar of Lyssa is active, if you’re only down to melee enemies, still change to Apply Poison because most melee classes have relatively quick activating skills, thus it is unlikely you’ll catch them while activating a skill. The poison effect from your bow should be more than enough to aid your team in defeating those little nuisances.
Of course, Troll Unguent and Faithful Intervention are your emergency/self heals and since this build lacks a defensive stance like most rangers possess, it is advisable that you retreat if confronted by close ranged enemies or are facing large amounts of damage. As for the Signet, well, hopefully you’ll never have to use this, if you do, try and save it for a monk :)
Possible/Suggested Skill Changes:
Savage Shot could easily be replaced with Dual Shot which adds a nice bit of damage if you are facing enemies with rather long casting times.
Faithful Intervention could be replaced with a defensive stance of some sort belonging to the Wilderness Survival category.
Read the Wind could be replaced by Favorable Winds so you can utilize Apply Poison at the same time, however do not forget this also buffs enemy rangers.
Savage Shot could be replaced with Focused Shot for a somewhat quick recharging damage boost.
Whatever you see fit, though Savage Shot and Faithful Intervention are the most non-crucial elements to the build.
Final Thoughts/Notes:
This build was tested in a PvE environment for the most part with a brief visit into Alliance Battles which proved to be promising, though most likely requires tweaking. Of course questions, comments, suggestions and constructive criticism are also welcomed.
Enjoy,
Hiro Ayami
