Hello fellow Guild Wars fans,
The most underestimated elementalist is without doubt the hydromancer. Although hydromancers might not always be the best damage dealers for PvE, they seem to be designed for the arena.
Hydromancers have lots of uses in the arena. They can be complete anti-warriors and can be a great support for any party. Plus, if people protect themselves of elemental damage, they will always protect against fire damage. Nobody expects to fight a hydromancer!
Here's the build I use for aliance battles:

I have 16 Water magic and 13 energy storage
1: Ice Spear: Strikes for 74 damage for 5 energy, has half the range but recharges almost instantly. This is the main damage output. This is a great skill to deal a lot of damage fast and for taking out other elementalists, necros, monks or mesmers. Hit them a few times and they're dead. You clould slow them first so they can't get away. Watch out for backfire!
2: Shard Storm: Strikes for 69 damage for 10 energy and slows the target for 66% for 6 seconds. Great for slowing players that are running away from your teams warrior so he can slice them up or for slowing and thus hindering warriors.
3: Ice Spikes: Strikes target and adjacent foes for 84 damage and slows them for 66% for 6 seconds. Costs 15 energy. Nice damage dealer and nice for slowing runners and small groups of warriors. It looks cool (pun not intended) too!
4: Deep Freeze: Deals 90 damage to all foes in the targets location and slows all of them for 66% for 10 seconds. Costs 25 energy, but worth it. Great crowd control, use it only on large groups. If you have a nuker with you, he can start nuking the group since they won't be able to run away anyway.
5: Blurred Vision: Costs 15 energy. Target foe and foes adjacent to him get hexed. When hexed, their attacks have 50% chance to miss. It lasts 21 seconds and recharges in 30 seconds. Use this on small groups of warriors or rangers.
6: Mist Form (elite): The key of this build. This enchantment costs 10 energy, lasts 21 seconds and recharges in 30 seconds. When enchanted by Mist Form, you can't take ANY damage from attacks. This is the best elite to keep yourself alive. It happened once that 2 warriors and a ranger were attacking me and they just couldn't hurt me. Most people don't know Mist Form so most warriors keep attacking you for 21 seconds, thinking it's a glitch. This is enough time to kill them with ice spears. If You see Mist Form is going to end, slow the warrior(s) and run away.
Note: when enchanted you too can't deal damage from attacks, but as an elementalist, you only use spells so that won't be a problem.
7: Aura Of Restoration: Just to get some extra health, always useful.
8: Water Attunement: Gives back 30% of all energy used on water spells.
Remember: WARRIORS CAN'T DO A THING IF THEY CAN'T GET CLOSE! Focus on them and keep slowing and blurring them. Keep an eye on your warriors and slow their victims so they wont get a chance to run away. If you see a warrior coming for you, slow him and use Mist Form when he gets to close. You could also just slow him and run away. Also, since nobody (until now) knows what a hydromancer can do, inform your teammates about your strategy. Tell the casters to run away after they see the warrior attacking them getting ice spiked, the warrior won't be able to follow themanyway.
The weapon you'll want to equip is Flints Fleshcleaver, the ultimate weapon for hydromancers. I would have included a picture, but this is my first post and i have'nt figured out how to include a picture yet. Here's what it does:
- 11-22 Damage (req 9 water magic)
- Energy plus 15
- Halves casting time for water magic (20% chance)
- Halves recharge of water magic skills (20% chance)
- Health +30
It is very cheap since nobody uses water. Same for runes. I got the fleshcleaver for 4 k.
There are only three things you are vulnerable to and those are:
- Domination mesmers
- Interrupting rangers
- Warrior/Elementalists who can break through the Mist Form.
Avoid these and soon your enemies will be hydrophobics.
You'll find this is usefull, give it a try!
