Hello fellow Guild Wars fans,

The most underestimated elementalist is without doubt the hydromancer. Although hydromancers might not always be the best damage dealers for PvE, they seem to be designed for the arena.

Hydromancers have lots of uses in the arena. They can be complete anti-warriors and can be a great support for any party. Plus, if people protect themselves of elemental damage, they will always protect against fire damage. Nobody expects to fight a hydromancer!

Here's the build I use for aliance battles:

I have 16 Water magic and 13 energy storage

1: Ice Spear: Strikes for 74 damage for 5 energy, has half the range but recharges almost instantly. This is the main damage output. This is a great skill to deal a lot of damage fast and for taking out other elementalists, necros, monks or mesmers. Hit them a few times and they're dead. You clould slow them first so they can't get away. Watch out for backfire!

2: Shard Storm: Strikes for 69 damage for 10 energy and slows the target for 66% for 6 seconds. Great for slowing players that are running away from your teams warrior so he can slice them up or for slowing and thus hindering warriors.

3: Ice Spikes: Strikes target and adjacent foes for 84 damage and slows them for 66% for 6 seconds. Costs 15 energy. Nice damage dealer and nice for slowing runners and small groups of warriors. It looks cool (pun not intended) too!

4: Deep Freeze: Deals 90 damage to all foes in the targets location and slows all of them for 66% for 10 seconds. Costs 25 energy, but worth it. Great crowd control, use it only on large groups. If you have a nuker with you, he can start nuking the group since they won't be able to run away anyway.

5: Blurred Vision: Costs 15 energy. Target foe and foes adjacent to him get hexed. When hexed, their attacks have 50% chance to miss. It lasts 21 seconds and recharges in 30 seconds. Use this on small groups of warriors or rangers.

6: Mist Form (elite): The key of this build. This enchantment costs 10 energy, lasts 21 seconds and recharges in 30 seconds. When enchanted by Mist Form, you can't take ANY damage from attacks. This is the best elite to keep yourself alive. It happened once that 2 warriors and a ranger were attacking me and they just couldn't hurt me. Most people don't know Mist Form so most warriors keep attacking you for 21 seconds, thinking it's a glitch. This is enough time to kill them with ice spears. If You see Mist Form is going to end, slow the warrior(s) and run away.
Note: when enchanted you too can't deal damage from attacks, but as an elementalist, you only use spells so that won't be a problem.

7: Aura Of Restoration: Just to get some extra health, always useful.

8: Water Attunement: Gives back 30% of all energy used on water spells.

Remember: WARRIORS CAN'T DO A THING IF THEY CAN'T GET CLOSE! Focus on them and keep slowing and blurring them. Keep an eye on your warriors and slow their victims so they wont get a chance to run away. If you see a warrior coming for you, slow him and use Mist Form when he gets to close. You could also just slow him and run away. Also, since nobody (until now) knows what a hydromancer can do, inform your teammates about your strategy. Tell the casters to run away after they see the warrior attacking them getting ice spiked, the warrior won't be able to follow themanyway.

The weapon you'll want to equip is Flints Fleshcleaver, the ultimate weapon for hydromancers. I would have included a picture, but this is my first post and i have'nt figured out how to include a picture yet. Here's what it does:
- 11-22 Damage (req 9 water magic)
- Energy plus 15
- Halves casting time for water magic (20% chance)
- Halves recharge of water magic skills (20% chance)
- Health +30
It is very cheap since nobody uses water. Same for runes. I got the fleshcleaver for 4 k.

There are only three things you are vulnerable to and those are:
- Domination mesmers
- Interrupting rangers
- Warrior/Elementalists who can break through the Mist Form.

Avoid these and soon your enemies will be hydrophobics.

You'll find this is usefull, give it a try!

Hahaha ace build i love same build tht i use good guide

  *smite* on 06/04/06 22:22

I use almost the same build, but with Armor of Mist, since I haven't capped Mist Form yet. Faith (my monk) got me a Fleshcleaver right when Grenth's opened up, and I definitely second the 'ultimate weapon for hydromancers' statement!

Nice guide, for sure. Us Hydromancers are grossly underrepresented!

  Brother Christ on 06/04/06 22:34

water has always been my favorite, but why not use the one ice spell that only uses 10 energy.. freezes for 21 seconds, and has little recharge? i forgot what its called but it end if the target takes fire damage. Swap that with deepfreeze is my only suggestion.

  Scizzors1215 on 06/05/06 00:43

U have gotta include a rez singet in this if its an arena build.. to prevent the rest of ur team suffering :/

  madman24749 on 06/05/06 01:29

Very good build, will try some time ya

  jovlo on 06/05/06 02:37

Well, The reason I don't bring Ice/Tenai's Prison is that it ends when the victim gets hit with fire damage. This happens all the time (fiery dragon swords, kindle arrows and almost every elementalist does fire damage) so it has little effect unless you're lucky. I didnt include a res signet because this is a build for aliance battles where you get ressed whenever you die. I found this build less usefull in the normal arena since hydromancers are best when they dont draw to much attention to themselves. If you want to go into the normal arena, replace Deep Freeze with a res sig and maybe blurred vision with ice prison.

  CaptainBobby on 06/05/06 10:02

Yeah, Bringing any Res in Alliance Battles will get you and your teammates killed really quick. Also you can only use the Signet 1 time so it becomes a wasted spot on the skill bar.

  The Hobbesinator on 06/05/06 11:38

nice build... you should test it in 1vs1 with a firespiker ele and see which wins, scrim it... for educational purposes only of course

(i like the scrims (pratice gvg) to test out builds and proving to fellow guildmates that a warrior + assassin cant touch a trapper ranger with (shatter enchantment))

  CaptainBobby on 06/05/06 13:44

My warrior could destroy a trapper ranger in no time. :-)

  Nikhera on 06/05/06 21:36

This build works amazignly well. Tried it with my Ele, I even bought FF :) I only have 15 Water Magic, but it is still effective. I was able to kill Warriors and Assassins with ease. I got screwed over by a Mesmer and an SS Necro a few times, but otherwise, piece of caek.

Thank you so much!

  jovlo on 06/06/06 03:08

Glad you like it!

I took on a pyromancer once in a 1 on 1 guild scrimmage and I won. I brought Ward Against Harm wich gives +24 armor and +62 armor against fire. I couldn't beat a geomancer though, to much armor. Taking on warriors in 1 on 1 is a piece of cake with this build. You can also bring Icy Prism (factions) to interrupt signets, rust to tripple the "casting" time of signets (healing sig does -40 armor when used) and Vapor Blade (127 damage if not enchanted!)(factions).

I think I will add a water build for PVE to soon. Yes, you can nuke with water.

  Kikuta on 06/06/06 09:14

Time to bring out my anti-enchantment mesmer, methinks. Backfire will need adding :P

Monk As Secondary?  Halobump on 06/06/06 12:42

It does seem like you have a slight weakness when it comes to healing, perhaps you could take Monk as a secondary and include a simple healing spell instead of Aura of Restoration?

Aura of Restoration is actually better because if your in a fight you dont have to worry about using a healing skill every time you lose more then 50 health. Since you will be spamming spells you will be getting more healing than you need(though unless your purposely trying to kill yourself thats a good thing)!

  Albino Monktress on 06/07/06 21:46

AHHH WHERE IS MY FAVORAT MOVE malestrom TO SCREW OVER CASTERS
(oops caps lock and was gonna cap malestrom and didnt feel like re typeing it)

  jovlo on 06/08/06 03:30

I've tried bringing Maelstrom but its just no good in PVP because almost everyone runs away. Maelstrom should only be used in PVE for some nuking.

  Solicity on 06/13/06 16:20

interesting build for pvp! i will need to try it out some time! :)

you could add to the list of weaknesses an IW mesmer with elemental resistance though...

  Teslyn Bluelight on 06/27/06 18:53

nice build man.. just got everything set up and ready to use next time i log in. cant wait to get those damn warriors back for all the times they killed my Ritualist haha

thanks for the info

  musicluver027 on 11/11/06 22:03

this build looks really good! just one question... how do you get mist form?
