TDM’s Overall 55 Monk Farming Guide:
This guide was written to explain the thought process behind farming to people who do not already know it. I will also give one monk build (out of many) which I have found to be the fastest out of all the ones I have tested. I do not want to hear complaints about the person already having this, or thinking that I took it from a different website. I built the build from scratch my self, basing it on ideas from about 4-5 other builds. Many other people probably use this build already, but this is not for the person who already knows how to farm with a 55 monk. All that said, on to my guide!
If you have never heard of a 55 Monk, here is a short explanation of what it is. A 55 Monk is a monk who uses 5 Superior Runes to get their health down to 105hp, then they use the -50 Grim Cesta (can be obtained from the Cities of Ascalon quest) to get the health down to 55 hp. The reason for doing this tie into the spells used to keep you alive, mainly Protective Spirit, Healing Breeze and Mending. As you will read later in the guide, Protective Spirit will only let you take 10% of your max hp as damage, for a 55 monk, that means only 5 damage per hit. When you have Mending and Healing Breeze on your self, you have a +12 health regeneration. In other words, you’re invincible.
I use Blessed Aura and a one handed weapon with a 18-20% enchantment mod, this makes Shield of Judgment last about 45% longer, making it so you require to only cast it once (in most circumstances) to kill all the mobs around you.
Now onto the build it self. Here is a picture showing the build and skill setup. I didn’t bother posting pictures of the armor, because it is as simple as 5 superior runes (one of each, then a double of one). I use the Zealots Scalp Design and that’s how I get the 16 in smiting. As I said, the picture will tell you the rest of the build:
Enchantments:
First cast Mending and Balthazar’s Spirit. Let your energy regenerate to full. Then cast Essence bond and let your energy regenerate to about 30+, then cast Blessed Aura.
The logic behind the damage in this build:
The core damage dealer in this build is Shield of Judgment, and the secondary dealer is Zealots Fire. A lot of you might say that Zealots Fire was nerfed in the update. In part this is true, but the beautiful thing about Zealots Fire is that it is only activated when you cast a spell on your self. The way I do this to use it and not loose aggro, is simply this: pace your self! You don’t have to cast Healing Breeze immediately after Protective Spirit, vice versa. Stagger the casting of the two so that you constantly deal damage with it, but don’t cast so fast that they consider it AoE damage. I found that if you give about 2 seconds between each cast, they will not leave you, and you do pretty good damage along side of Shield of Judgment. Each of the different mobs have different kinds of interrupts. Trolls have Disruptive Chop, Grawl have Knockdown, and Hydras have Meteor. There is a logical pattern behind casting spells, especially when you are using Shield of Judgment. All you have to do is cast spells between their attacks (because they are knocked down), this is a perfect time to cast because they aren’t attacking you (duh).
The actual Utilization of the build:
When you are in the middle of your mobs, simply cast Shield of Judgment once, then cast Protective Spirit and Healing Breeze again (to keep them going), then cast Zealots Fire, and alternate between Protective Spirit and Healing Breeze to keep your self alive and to deal more damage. If they are not dead by the time you are done, cast Shield of Judgment again until they are dead.
Trolls:
In the case of Troll Cave farming, I personally cast all of these, run up to the Avacari or Mountain Trolls (whichever is first) then I put Protective Spirit on and run through them. (If you encounter Avacari, cast Healing Breeze also. Their archers will kill you if not).
Grawl:
If you are farming the Grawl outside of Port Sledge, you can follow the same exact build etc, but just cast Protective Spirit as you aggro them. Make sure not to get to close to the Grawl Crone’s, they will use Cannibalism on you and remove your Protective Spirit. To take care of this, you can cast Healing Breeze and let them take that one off, but I find its easier to just watch your process for aggro.
Hydra:
Outside of Augury Rock, in Amnoon Oasis, the Hydras are. These are farmed very frequently as well. The trick is to cast all the enchantments, then cast Protective Spirit and Healing Breeze before you aggro a group of Hydras. These mobs use Meteor and will knock you down, so be careful when you cast your Healing Breeze and Protective Spirit etc, don’t let them interrupt you.
Overall farming Tips:
One of the most important things I can urge for you to think about while farming is this: look at their patterns of actions. How can you adapt your farming to that? I used to use a similar build, but using Spiteful Spirit. This build works very well, but it doesn’t give you a break between each attack. On the other hand, while farming Hydras, Spiteful Spirit works very well, because each time they cast a spell they also take damage. But in most cases Shield of Judgment, along with Blessed Spirit and the 18-20% enchantment mod on your weapon, this is more effective.
If you want to be good and effective, you must think logically about the situation and remember cause and effect. If you end up dying or being interrupted, try to look at the situation and ask your self how they interrupted you. Was your timing wrong? Were you simply unlucky? Several questions like this will help you isolate problems and save you from going to the forums and asking people what you are doing wrong, just to have them come with a simple answer.
I hope this build was of some help to all of you who need help on understanding the 55 Monk thought process and farming strategy!
