Hi, immunis here!
Here’s my first build submitted to the Gameamp website, I hope you enjoy. This guide was tested extensively in random arenas and I absolutely love using it. I first tested it with arcane conundrum, but found that adding necromancer curse spells was a better way to go via damage against ALL classes. At the end there is a nice little usage summary for the lazy ones, and for those who don’t mind reading I do go a bit in-depth on usage. So here it goes:

First off, the skill setup:

As you can see I’ve ordered these in a specific order and the variables in the skills are set for the attributes I'll show you next. I have the skills ordered this way for ease of use with the number keys.

What you can switch out:

Weaken Armor
For:
Barbs (Curses) - adds damage
Mark of Pain (Curses) - Adjacent enemies takes so much damage with every physical hit

Whirling Defense (Optional Slot)
For:
Throw Dirt (Wilderness Survival) – to blind enemy and adjacent enemies
Dust Trap (Wilderness Survival) – Blind enemies in the area of effect
Antidote Signet (No Attribute)- Cure poison, disease, blind

Attributes, what adds the punch to the skills:

Curses: 7
Not Applicable

Expertise: 10 +1 = 11
Minor Rune of Expertise (+1)

Wilderness Survival: 10 +1 = 11
Minor Rune of Wilderness Survival (+1)

Marksmanship: 9 +1 +3 = 13
Mask (+1) + Superior Rune of Marksmanship (+3)

For me this was the best set up of attributes, you can, of course vary if you’d like with differing results.

Armor, What’s between you and the damage:

This is a list of what I recommend you can use. Use either this or Drakescale Armor for the added protection against elemental damage.
Make sure to include the Superior Rune of Vigor

Your Weapons:

I recommend the sundering mod and vampiric mod for their added damage and the fortifying mod is a must seeing as you have a superior rune on your armor. Im pretty sure the sundering mod will be your best bet for added damage in my opinion. There are differing opinions on which adds ore damage. In my experience it is the sundering mod. I use the recurve and short bow for their attack speed.

How to use this build:

Choosing your target:
Attacking Melee:
Best target of course is casters, if you have weaken armor (which I recommend) warriors won’t be much of a problem with the added damage along with the sundering bow and casters will be dealt quite a bit of damage per shot. Of course use distracting shot, punishing shot, and savage shot to disrupt anything you can on warriors, especially res signets and heal signets. If you come across any odd little melee rangers or Illusionary Weaponry (IW) Mesmers focus on them immediately, they deal damage quick and highly effectively.

Attacking Casters:
Weaken armor is really good because with it you can hit 100+ with the sundering mod on. The key is to hit a long term spell (fireball, backfire, healing breeze, guardian) with concussion shot due to its using so much energy even with expertise on 11, and the fact that it causes 18 seconds of dazed. If you don’t have the energy afterwards that’s what we have our other 3 disrupt skills for.

Attacking Other Rangers:
This is the trickiest class to play against I believe, not only can they blind, they may do poison, crippling, or even distract your troll ungent. This is what we have whirling defense for: to evade their attacks and give ourselves a chance to cast troll ungent on ourselves. You may want to replace whirling with dodge to get away and cast troll ungent. Or if your style is instant retribution replace whirling with antidote signet to get back in the game quickly and deal some damage back. Your best chance at offense is to try and distract them as much as possible depending on their build. A lot of rangers focus on poisons, traps, and spiking. They do all this via preparations or skills that take at least 2 seconds to bring up. That’s your chance to get back. Your best possibility is to get their timing down quickly and spam your disrupts when the timing is right. Also remember the necro spell you’re carrying will help with damage along with your sundering/vampiric mod.

Your Defense:
When being attacked you have troll ungent and whirling defense on your defensive lines and hopefully a monk to help with healing when you need it. You can replace whirling defense with dodge due to it also having a good 75% chance to evade attacks and you can hightail it out of tight situations. Be careful of IW, you cannot evade it (if I am wrong please correct me, I tried whirling defense to no avail.)

Summary of usage for all those lazy people:
1. Spam your necro spell,
2. Use concussion shot first off if possible, spam disrupt skills, focus on casters or those odd little melee rangers and IW mesmers first, warriors lastly.
3. Keep an eye open for rezzers and use distracting shot on them. DO NOT use concussion shot, it is only for spells disruption.
4. Against rangers get their timing down and hope to get the advantage with your disrupts and heavy damage via necro spell and sundering/vampiric mod.
5. Remember whirling defense cannot evade IW.

I hope you enjoyed this guide and that you found it useful! Please leave comments and positive feedback! I want to know YOUR opinion.

  nuked_nova on 04/05/06 21:37

This build looks EXTREMELY useful. When I get my laptop back, I'm definately gonna have to try this out! EXCELLENT guide, what all guides should be like =D

Throw Dirt is actually expertise, I think

  immunis on 04/05/06 23:03

Ah, yes, i knew there was a screw up in there soewhere, lol.
Yes Throw Dirt is Expertise.
Thank You Botchu, ill +cred one of your posts

  Corrupted Byte on 04/05/06 23:46

how come you have an 15% more dmg while under an enchantment? Why not use a 15^50 mod instead on your bows?

  immunis on 04/06/06 00:08

Oops, i think i rushed thru that, ill fix that now, thanx for the catch, +cred on one of your posts Corrupted.

  GStricto on 04/06/06 02:40

The images for the bows you use are two of the exact same item.

As for sundering doing more than vamp... HA. Essentially, a 1/10 chance of +damage will never keep up with the guranteed +50 damage a vamp would be doing over the same interval. I can go into more detail if you wish, just send me a PM.

Also, armor +5 normally works out better than HP +30. You might want the armor on the shortbow and HP on recurve. (Reduce damage up close, pull back and get the HP boost when you have degen on you.)

Expertise would be better spend dropping to 9 or 10 or boosted up to 13 (common breakpoints) and then the attribute re-distributed to other categories.

Not meaning to sound like an ass, just trying to help tweak the build for every last bit of performance.

In my opinion...  immunis on 04/06/06 09:08

I debated whether or not to put on the +30HP or +5 armor. I decided finally on +30hp due to the use of a superior marksmanship rune. I personally never go in with less than 450hp for PvP.

There is an ongoing debate whether not not sundering or vampiric is better than the other, i just go with sundering cuz my critical luck is usually pretty good.

After testing out Expertise i found 44% is quite enough for this build
it reduces attack energies close enough to 50% to work very well.

However this is all opinion on my part. Others such as yourself may find the afformentioned tweaks to be very good for them. Working with the build the way it is is fine.

Thank you for seeing the pic error i will award +cred on one of your posts for seeing this error. I meant to use short bow but was in a rush fixing a previous error in the original pic

hmm the build is very nice :D
but one thing makes me wonder: is this interrupt or dmg build??
it's a very good dmg indeed, the Weaken Armor helps alot.
But imho you should've taken Read The Wind to make your interrupting more efficient...

  immunis on 04/06/06 14:38

I dont use any preperations for the soul purpose that it runs out after 24 seconds and you have to reapply which takes 2 seconds, giving the enemy 2 seconds to heal themselves quite a bit. This build is for close range, in your face constant interupts while dealing good damage at the same time.

  Hammerite Rozsda on 04/06/06 15:15

great guide....i might switch to Necro and use Weaken Armor with my damage ranger build...sounds like awesome fun and even more damage :D

  Grimgram on 04/06/06 17:52

hmm i like the necro curse but it looks like this build whuld run out of energy quite fast....

when i use interupt build i bring 15 expertise and 16 marksmanship and i leave the concussion shot and after a few mins i find that i gotta wait for energy recharge... (atleast if im the sole interuptor) and i dont wanna think about what whuld happen if i brought concussion in aswell

  Genesis_Dragon on 04/06/06 20:39

Have you ever considered using Spinal Shivers (also curses), then use an Icy Bow... every hit is then an interrupt. If you add a speed buff like Lightning Reflexes, you're basically a Machine Gunning interrupter. It's good for the lucky interrupts vs quick casts, as well as your intentional interrupts ofcourse.

  DwarvenKing on 04/07/06 12:11

spinal shivers sounds good BUT he would lose 10-6 energy every time target is interrupted,i reckon there would be no energy left after 3-4 shots :P

  immunis on 04/07/06 12:57

Yeah that was the main reason i didnt list it as a possible replacement skill. Bad on energy.

  Zerdonal on 04/13/06 19:35

ive seen my team pwned in HoH by a group who had a pretty nasty ranger

wouldn't using nature's renewal (enchantments/hexes take twice as long to cast) help against nearly all casters?

great guide; il check out some others on rangers
