No reason to close "controversial" topics, it just gives people more to talk about.
People don't agree with other people's comments which leads to flaming/derailing in the thread which gets it closed.
Global warming isn't a topic that is close-worthy, mainly because it doesn't exist :O! But srsly, not close-worthy.
