Fun thing is, you can take a level 17 Alesia with you... she doesn't last very long.

The portal is there because there is a quest from a Ghost in Desolation that wants you to find her Husband Ghost, the quest has you killing Kepkhet to avenge the deaths of their daughters.

I stumbled across it while exploring the Crystal Overlook - was gonna submit a screen with my level 17 Alesia in Dessolation, but never got round to it >.<
