I sent them into the portal using the flag, and they kept going in, and appearing by me, and then running back in. It was actually very fun. I recommend you try it.
First time I tried it (back during the pve preview), they just went straight through the portal and stood on the other side.
Now they teleport. It's fun to make them so while running away the swirl :D
