They heared our prays. In the folowing weeks Skill balances will be made folowing a new system;

They have made PvE and PvP skills separently.

Rather than introducing another skill update this week, we're finishing a new system to balance key skills separately for PvP and PvE. Within the next few weeks, we'll introduce PvP versions for a handful of skills. When we see something becoming severely imbalanced in PvP, we'd like to avoid harsh PvE nerfs without creating different versions of a large number of skills.

Skills that differ in PvP will have (PvP) at the end of their names when in PvP outposts and matches. These skills will automatically be adjusted within PvP outposts and matches. All players have to do is equip the skill as normal, and it will use the PvP version where appropriate.

We've decided to release our next skill balance update simultaneously with these changes. We can take full advantage of the new skill balancing mechanism and avoid multiple balances over a short time frame. 


EDIT: After reading the whole lot.. I think they did a good job with this. Maybe people will now be convinced to play other stuff than.. *ahem* Ursan. And ofcourse it's easier to nerf stuff like sway without nerfing stuff in PvE too (LoD will work great on hero monk if they revert it).

So are they gonna restore alot of our favorite skills in pve back to their good settings or are they starting this where its at and just modify according to where problems arise?

I find it astonishing that nobody has realised what they have actually done.
I'll put it in 2 short sentences.

1) They've put Ursan in the game.
2) They've stifled any change that would be caused by a skill update.

In other words, very little is ever going to change in PvE after they've reverted some of the ex-overpowered skills back to "too good" status.

What does this mean?
Everyone will continue to only use 1 thing to do everything, nothing will change, so nobody needs to be creative. The PvE community's creativity decreases, they get stuck doing the same thing over and over again, the average PvEr skill vs average PvPer skill gap increases, PvErs find it even harder to get rank, PvErs get even more annoyed at pvp elitism, they get R12 zaishen, that doesn't help them even though it is a "pvp title", they emote the crap out of each other for a while, they get annoyed that they can't pvp, they do everything they can in pve, they bitch and moan and threaten to quit the game, they do quit, they buy GW2, ANet doesn't have to keep up as many servers for pve, ANet is happy because it lowers expenses.

Now I actually feel sorry for PvErs :( . If you're lucky, maybe they'll change it back. At least it means PvE staples can be nerfed into oblivion for PvP when they become problems now, so for PvPers, its a good thing, for PvErs, its a bad thing.

You have no idea how surprised I am by your reactions.

To me (as a PvE'er), skill changes were always something I looked forward to, a new chance to get my creativity going (Really thinking about skills such as Foul Feast and Wail of Doom now). It made things new and more exciting to me, 'cause I have to be honest, I think things will certainly get boring if they won't change for a month, even more so because I've been playing GW for over 2 years now and I kinda have "seen everything already", if you know what I mean.

Whatever happens, I sure hope they won't revert WoD to it's original function. =P

Because you are thinking really deep in your statement. To be honest i think if they revert to their old skills in just PvE to bring it back to original, maybe just maybe it will cut down on all the mindless ursan use and the game will regrow. Before ursan we had awesome skills, and since then they have done nothing but make the game less enjoyable by having PvP and PvE skills linked. The game is going to get better now that PvE and PvP are that much more farther apart. PvE'rs play PvE, PvP'rs will play PvP. Some will play both, and they will enjoy it. I Play both and i will not have a problem with it at all. And what the hell do you mean increasing gap between them? So what if the skills are different. People DO have the ability to be able to handle two different worlds in a video game.

Well thats me.

Feel free to explain more to me. I'm open for discussion.

I feel kinda funny about this update because I can only think of two skills I ever really used that got nerfed, and one of them wasn't even really a nerf, just a slight duration adjustment.

(Spirit Bond was the nerf, only for farming, and Ward against Melee was the adjustment; I suppose the soul-reaping nerf would affect me if I played my necro more)

Yea, I guess I should have touched upon the immediate elation. Its totally understandable that right now, the fact that PvP nerfs aren't going to affect you anymore seems awesome. My post was looking more at the long term effects of what will probably happen (I can't predict the future, but it is a logical progression, you cannot deny that).
I highly doubt that skills being reverted will stop Ursan being used. It deals high damage, increases your armour and life and is easy to use. In short, it is the perfect skill for killing monsters.
What I meant by an increasing skill gap is this:

On average, a PvPer is better than a PvEr simply because the more (s)he plays, the more different situations (s)he will encounter. This makes the PvPer more able to adapt.
The PvEr on the other hand, the more (s)he plays, the better they get at handling that specific situation, since AI monsters are ed.
This means that the PvPer is more flexible than the PvEr. Add into that the fact that the PvPer is going to have skills nerfed, or have to change due to other skills being buffed or nerfed means that they will constantly be adapting to new situations, and constantly learning. Doing the exact same thing over and over can only teach you so much, and so, in this respect, the PvEr's progress is handicapped, whereas the PvPer's is limitless.

Oh, and I doubt that SB farming will be back. Ursan is already easy enough, and with loot scaling there really is no benefit to going solo.
