| Wyat's Pop-Cultural Reference Contest! |
|
|
|
Phew, I am so sorry this took so long time to set up, my last couple of days have been quite busy, so I've had no choice but to postpone it. Nevertheless, it's about time we got started now!
I would first of like to thank DarkDoe and itsthatemochild for both making suggestions that gave me the inspiration for this contest, as referred to in THIS thread. Congratulations to both of you, you have managed to earn yourself +25 credibility points and 1 Zaishen Key each! Just remember to pick the key up by PM-ing me ingame, the IGN is Wyat Hawke. With that done, let us move on shall we? ^_^
The Best Popular Culture Reference Contest
That's right! Today and for the next two weeks you are going to hunt the depths of Tyria for the best pop-cultural reference ever made. Perhaps you know of a great scenery that resembles a real-life one? Have you found a dialogue that is a direct reference to a TV-show perhaps? Or perhaps you would like to try and recreate one of your favourite movie scenes?
The options are almost endless, so I've provided a few rules to this contest to make it slightly easier for us all. After the rules I'll show a possible way to do it as well, so everything is understandable.
RULES:
- You can submit 3 references
- The first one to submit a reference is the first one to gain credit for it.
- You have to post a reference that can actually be proven to be a referenence, by giving showing where you have found it in real life (or to simplify, I have to understand the reference)
- Dialogues, scenery similiarities, look-a-likes, something that resembles a painting, anything is allowed as long as we can find it somewhere else
- You have to post 1 picture with the reference found ingame, and 1 picture (if possible) that shows where you have taken it from. See the example below
- You can edit your pictures with photoshopping programs, but only if you want to add small talk bubbles with text in (to emphasize what this is a reference to. A reference containing the Godfather for an example, is really no good if you don't have the words \"Never go against the family\" in it, eh? ^^)
- In addition to the pictures, you can add some text if you like, explaining why you chose this particular reference, what it means, additional info, where to find it ingame, etc. The more details the better!
- If you wish to resubmit, then you are allowed to pick a new reference before the contest ends. Just remember that the you cannot use a reference someone else has posted.
- The contest ends at the 1th of March
To give an example of a reference, I would like to show of a pretty known one, namely the quest Drakes on the Plain. This quest is a direct reference to the rather infamous movie, Snakes on a Plane starring Samuel Jackson. At one point in the film, Jackson turns around and utters the now quite famous words "Enough is enough! I have had it with these mother******* snakes on this mother******* plane!":
Here is Guild Wars take on it:
And the screenshot from the movie:
Additionally, in the same quest there are several other references to the same movie, and to others. My favourite is the \"Self-Defense Against Fruit\" one, which is found in the reward dialogue. Everybody should really watch that clip from the Monty Pythons, it's quite hilarious.
For additional info on more references found in this particular quest, go to This webpage, and look at the bottom called \"Trivia\"
Remember that you can add a lot more detail than what I did, this was just merely an example of how it could be done. And I cheated as well, the screenshot was taken from the wiki. All screenshots from the game must be authentic, no copying off wiki (it's easy to find out if you do it anyway).
Prizes!
Third Prize: +25 cred and a Purple Miniature Kirin (est. value, 10k)
Second Prize: +50 cred and 10 Zaishen Keys (est. value, 30k)
First prize: +100 cred and a Purple 2 year Miniature Koss! (est. value, 40k)
So jump on the wagon right now, try to find YOUR best suggestion for a pop-cultural reference now!
Some small suggestions:
- Try to make the picture resemble each other as much as possible, that looks better
- And make sure they aren't cluttered up by anything else distracting!
- Add some extra info to spice things up, and to make it look more interesting
- Try to pick references not commonly known, or references not often reffered to.
If you have any questions at all, then ask them here.
POST YOUR REFERENCES IN THIS THREAD BY CLICKING ON THIS SENTENCE!
Apart from that, the only thing I can say is:
Good luck! RAWR!

not giving out any more mini pigs, are we, Wyat? ^^
EDIT: i have a question about the judging. is the contest to find the closest similartiy, or the most obscure, or will all of that be taken into account?

The point is that you can try to recreate a scenario from a film, book or w/e, or you can find a direct reference (like the one I've given in my example).
A popular-cultural reference is when something that is popular today (e.g., GW) gives a reference to something else that is/have been popular. When we have a boss named Enadiz the Hardheaded, then that obviously is a reference to the famous soccer player Zinedine Zidane (Spell Zidane backwards to understan). Or have you noticed how some of the Luxons look like those nomads living in the desert in one of the Star Wars films?
That's a pop-reference. It doesn't have to be a sentence from a dialogue, it could just be a NPC's similarity with a real life person for that matter. As long as it seems like it's obvious that they have "copied" it from somewhere else, then it's acceptable ^_^
Oh and Jarm, yes you need a pic to prove it, I don't want people just wikiing it all. Go and explore some, and find it for yourself.
As for judging, the most "interesting" one will be chosen as the winner. I wish to keep most of my judging criteria secret, but how much it looks alike and the absurdity it gives is/could be important. Subtle references is also a good bet. But I really just wish you post one you like =)

wyat, frankly im disappointed in the community. seems like the one time you have a contest that requires them to think rather than snap a few screenies and upload them and they all bugger out
