Flameseeker
General Mathias looked out onto the horizon, searching for tracks of the Forgotten in The Scar -- a dangerous area of the Amnoon desert. He was a general of the Kournan army, the best of the best Elonian soldiers and mages of all kinds from each of the Elonian provinces. Lately, the Forgotten hadn’t attacked, and the leaders wanted to know just why that was. They sent patrols out in every direction from a place they called Amnoon City -- the capital of the new Elonian settlements. Every few days, the Forgotten used to attack the city, but now the attacks have stopped, and all that can be seen is the wide-open desert.
The Forgotten had been there for hundreds of years, the Elonians learned, from the time the gods left Tyria. They were snake-like creatures with very powerful magics, able to kill a man very quickly, and they were very hard to kill with the basic weaponry the soldiers carried.
Mathias jogged back to General Mendoza, who was the right-hand man to the leader of the Elonian settlements, and had come with them on their scouting party. He then sent six men over the next hill on the next patrol and sat down to talk with his captains. An hour later, three of the six men came back. They reported a large army of Forgotten massing five miles away. And at that moment, twenty or so Forgotten charged over the hill, spitting fire and slashing swords. The men were outnumbered, so they had no choice but to run back to Amnoon City. Three men were hit and killed instantly by the Forgotten’s Fire Storm. They ran for what seemed, to them, like forever towards the gates of Amnoon. Archers on the walls fired on the Forgotten to keep them back, but they did not slow. The scouting party finally made it inside, with only four men left, out of the twelve they left with.
General Mendoza left right away to report his findings to Turai Ossa -- the leader of the Elonian settlements. Turai Ossa was a great and powerful man, who was very respected. He had lead them from Elona many years ago, seeking Ascension, after he defeated Palawa Joko, Scourge of Vabbi.
The Forgotten were the latest problem. They had just appeared from the desert like scarabs, crawling all over the newly settled cities, killing all in their path. This troubled Ossa, for he did not know where they came from. Ossa was a man of strategy and war, though he did his best to keep his people from it. There was no other solution but to find where these snake-like things were coming from and destroy them. But there was no home city or dune they all came from. It seemed as though they fell from the skies…from the gods. Ossa sent patrols out every hour of every day to try and find a way to kill them. It was stressing him and every day they lost more good men to the Forgotten.
The four leaders of the Elonaian settlements sat in Ossa’s room, planning their next move. They talked of what that had happened earlier that day. They called General Mathias in to tell them about what happened in The Scar. He told them about what the Forgotten looked like and what weapons they used. Everything he told them about they found little pieces of in and around the bodies of the men. Three of the bodies that were left in the desert had not been moved, so the scouts went out to get them. They returned with horrid-looking skeletons. The leaders were stunned to see such a thing happen to a man. They also found bits of metal like they had never felt and part of a machine, of some kind. A few hours later, the leaders talked in Ossa’s room once again, and agreed that the Forgotten were building some sort of weapon, that they could probably use to destroy Amnoon and all other cities around it, by the size of the ammunition.
The next day, Ossa sent out an exceptionally large scouting party to find this weapon and figure out how to destroy it. The party was ambushed at the Dunes of Despair and their bodies were mutilated and skinned. Within the next few days, Ossa sent half the army of Elona to the Dunes of Despair to find the weapon he suspected of being there. And they found it. General Mathias ordered the men to surround the Dunes, and five thousand Forgotten soldiers and mages came out of the sand, right in front of them. The Forgotten Mage in the front spoke then, in a hissing voice. “You have come for the weapon, no?” Mathias nodded, knowing of nothing else to do. “And you are wondering why we killed so many of your people. It was because they are not ones who have been Chosen. There is no weapon here; we lured you with that illusion. But there is this…” Then the incredible happened. The Forgotten Mage reached toward the sky and a tower of blue flame flew from his hand, into the clouds above.
A moment later, all five of the Tyrian gods stood before them. Balthazar, Melandru, Dwayna, Lyssa, and Grenth and each blessed the Elonian soldiers with a divine gift. “You are the first Chosen of the Flameseeker Prophecies,” said Balthazar. His voice rumbled the sand and rocks around their feet. “You will be the guardians of the Hall of Heroes.” The soldiers stared up at him in amazement. “There will be more that come here, seeking the same gift you have. The gift of True Sight,” said Dwayna. “Glint, the Dragon, is our Prophet. Her lair is in a single grain of sand. She will help you guide the Chosen to their destiny in the Ring of Fire. Once they Ascend you must send them to her, and she will do the rest.” The gods bid them good-bye, and returned to the skies they came from, leaving only the Kournan soldiers…the first of the Chosen…to their destiny.
