The ranger knelt onto the ground and pressed his bow palm into the soil. In a handful clench, he picked up some content and slowly began to rinse his hands. The dirt on his hands would give him a tighter grip on his bow and arrows by reducing the friction between the hands and the weapon it carried. The predators around gazed patiently as the ranger made his preparations. Finally, the ranger stood up and for the first time, drew an arrow from his back and locked it onto his bowstring. He looked around and surveyed the surrounding, quietly whispering under his lips...
"Six tigers, eight lynxes, four boars, four wolves, and one big ugly otyugh. So that makes twenty two meat dishes and one bag of fertilizer. I only brought eight arrows, so that will leave the rest to you, Eugur."
The wind began to blow strongly from the ranger's back. The trees began to sway violently, as if its bowing to the ranger's might. Just as quickly, the strong wind died down to a steady breeze.
"I get the ones upwind. Oh, what am I saying... I never need to say the plan right, girl?" Eugur snarled. "Haha, yes. We never follow the plan anyway. Okay, sorry to keep you waiting. Let us begin."
The beasts understood the ranger's words and quickly began their attacks. Immediately, an arrow flew into a tiger's head, turning its ferocious growl into a whimper. After a few rolls on the ground, the tiger stopped struggling from pain. However, the brutal killing of its ally didn't calm the fervor of the other predators. Two lynxes quickly flanked the ranger and made its lunging positions from behind. The lynxes flew towards the ranger's back in an synced strike, but what welcomed them was the prepared stance of a snow wolf.
Eugur leaped into the air and with her paws, and slammed a lynx onto the ground. The second lynx ferociously aimed towards Eugur's neck with its claws. Eugur turned her head and caught the lynx's claw with her teeth. In a split second, the claws along with the paw was severed from the Lynx's feet, sending it crying in pain. Another tiger pounced towards Eugur from behind, trying to catch her off stance. As the tiger fell onto Eugur's thick blue fur, Eugur lightly shook off the tiger's carcass, which had two arrows sank into its head and neck.
"Four."
The ranger began shooting his arrows faster now, with one immediately following the previous. But the beasts also approached faster. As another two lynxes fell in front of the ranger, the two behind leaped over the fallen and ran towards the ranger with increasing speed. Now they were just three feet from the ranger. As they prepared to make their strike, a quick burst of flame shot out from the ground and engulfed the lynxes in fire. The lynxes roared in pain, but were quickly silenced by quick fatal arrows. In the meanwhile, Eugur pressed two lifeless tiger heads onto the ground and howled in triumph. However, Eugur's back was also viciously cut. A steady flow of red blended into Eugur's fur, as the remaining predators looked on in bloodthirst. The snow wolf leered back with its raging eyes and prompted for more challengers, while she slowly dusted some blood off her thighs with her half-tail.
"Ten."
A large white tiger looked Eugur in the eyes and let out a thundering bellow, signaling his challenge. The tiger calmly approached Eugur, and slowly crouched its head. Its ears occasionally moved from side to side, assessing the surroundings. Wolves began to circle Eugur and the ranger, waiting to move in for an easy kill. The tiger pounced toward Eugur and slashed its right claws across Eugur's face, barely missing it. The beast then threw out its left claws and sliced from above. Paying no mind to evade the attack, Eugur made her own lunge towards the tiger's body. The tiger's claws hacked through Eugur's back wound and blood filtered through. In a soft groan, the tiger withdrew its claws from Eugur's back and fell onto the ground with a chunk of flesh ripped from its chest. With no hesitation, Eugur charged through the remaining pack of lynxes, ripping and tearing in a frenzy. As Eugur made a corpse out of the last lynx, the wolves jumped onto her back and began biting.
"Almost... almost," whispered the ranger, who shot his last arrow into the head of a boar.
The very last wolf soon fell under Eugur's claws. Eugur was filled with blood; of her own and of the other beast's. A part of her ears were bitten off and her legs also sustained heavy injury, crippling her. But Eugur still stood firm; enraged and undefeated.
"Twenty two!"
Just this instant, a huge tentacle slammed Eugur from her peripheral, knocking her into a bush. It was the otyugh. The ranger ran to the nearest carcass to forage an arrow, but the tentacles caught up to him and tripped him onto the ground. The otyugh closed in onto the fallen ranger, readied to finish him off. The ranger sat up, reached behind his back and grabbed a handful of dirt from the ground. To his astonishment, a creature jumped onto the otyugh's head and mauled away at its flesh. The creature was covered in red, and its eyes shined like a bright lit moon. Of course, it was Eugur.
The otyugh let out a huge scream and redirected its tentacles to Eugur. In a lightning reflex, Eugur caught the incoming tentacle with her teeth and with all the pressure she could muster, she sanked them into it. The second tentacle lingered behind Eugur and in a sudden thrust, pierced through Eugur's body. The ranger jumped up and quickly locked his arrow in place. With deadly power and accuracy, he shot the arrow. Nature's wind carried the arrow and delivered it through the otyugh's head. The ranger slowly relaxed his bow, and patiently dusted off his pants. He walked towards the dead otyugh and knelt down beside it. Eugur's bright eyes shined with dignity as her teeth was still deeply entrenched in the otyugh's tentacle. The ranger hovered his hands over Eugur's eyes, and gently closed it.
"You sure showed them whoes the king of the forest, didn't you, Eugur. Look at you... you're covered in dirt. Comon now, if you don't let go of the tentacle I can't move you. Let go of it, Eugur."
The teeth loosened its grip.
"Silly Eugur," whispered the old ranger. "You're now in a place where you no longer have to heed my commands. Silly girl... silly silly girl."
