 I decided I should write an article about Girls and Gaming, but I didn't have the slightest clue on what to put into it. So here it goes.

My own experiences in the world of Guild Wars.

I'm 14
A female.
I have a name. (how cool is that?)
I've played games since I was 5.
I'm enjoying Guild Wars, and I'm addicted to it.
Oh, and I'm in the [AMP] guild.

I come across a lot of people telling me I'm just a boy thinking it's fun to act like a girl. This really pisses me off, this pisses me off so much, that at a certain point, I actually left the guild for a day. Later to get re-invited by Lani. I get teased a lot by Silly and his evil minions (read: Fea and Ryolan). Now, I don't really mind that, because I know, that in their heart they know I'm a girl but just like to tease me with it. However, I don't take it lightly if someone I don't know aswell as Silly and his friends tells me that. It seems girls that game are somesort of 'nonexistant' happening. Being called a boy is reinforced by the fact that I mostly play male characters. Now, you might ask me why I do that, it's easy, their armor looks better.

Anyway, most people in AMP are okay with me and accept me the way I am (a nasty little bitch).

Girl gaming is still hard to talk about for some people in this world. They simply cannot believe there's actually a girl sitting behind the computer who's not fat and ugly with glasses leaning on her nose. Infact, I have a boyfriend, I have long blonde hair and I'm the typical school girl who likes to shop for clothes and shoes with her friends. People think it's impossible to combine that with my active GW playing, but infact, it's quite easy. Girls play almost as much games as men, and one of the best Counterstrike clans is a female-only clan. Girls are just as, or maybe even better than your typical 15 year old male playing some games every day.
To reinforce my statement, let me quote something I found on a site just some minutes ago: "recently cited statistics showing that 26% of electronic game-players are women over 18, 21% are boys 6-17, 12% are girls 6-17, 38% are men over 18."

I think that says it all. Now please stop your whining and complaining about girls playing games and just accept us for who we are, and that we love gaming just as much as you do.
Gaming isn't 'boys-only' anymore, we're coming through to kick your butt.

The thing I'm trying to say here is that females are just as common as (or almost as) males and that you should accept it if you're talking to a girl when playing an online game and don't act weird about it, and definately tell her she's a boy 'cause that's plain mean.

Comments and critisism appreciated, stupid comments, on the other hand, are definately not.

I always had the chance (luck?) to play with girls, PnP RPGs and computer games too. In fact, when I started to play RPG, I was playing in an 50% female group :D (that means 2 girls and 2 boys... and a guy DM). I couldn't believe the fact that there were people who never met a "gaming girl"...
My roommate's a girl too*, and we usually play GW together. So, I can only second that: There ARE gaming girls out there! :D

another thing: I don't think girls are better or worse players: they just play different. They are usually better in some kind of games and wors in others, but not always. I really enjoy playing in a "merged" group, because either side has ideas the other wouldn't think of...

i play the game as i am, i dont really bother with the other players gender. if you say you are a boy, i am cool. if you say you are a girl, i am also cool with it.

((I do agree with the armor thing. That's why most of my characters are male ><:.))

oh well.

i am very glad to hear girls play GW, wish i met more of them during gameplay but i guess they feel they shouldnt talk about it cuz they fear guys will laugh at them.

i agree with you rin, i am a guy 15 yrs old, and i have a deep respect for women, they are just as important as men, (and no i'm not a sad freak with 42" widescreen glasses lol). WOMEN SHOULD NOT BE MOCKED FOR PLAYING GAMES, (that was 4 u rin).

can't belive that some ppl actually cares if they r playing with girls or guys... isn't it the result that counts?.... hmm......

if they tease u to much in amp u can always join our ranks rin ;P we got loads of girls in mutants :P

and... btw the reson as to all my chars r female while im not is simple..... i rather check out a nice girl's ass all day long than a hairy guy butt...

Nice one Rin. Gender in role playing games is a weird thing I tend to think of the character Im looking at. Its pretty obvious to spot certain types of male behaviour in game but in a few cases Ive been genuinely surprised to find out the female character is played by a male . Getting treated differently or targetted for 'fun' because your a girl is just plain crap. Glad you decided to return to the guild :-)

Why the flip does everyone hate 12 year olds? Every game: "What are you, some loser 12 year old?" Hate to break it to ya, pal, I AM!! It's almost as bad as being called a noob! Apparently a 20 year old pwnz a 12 year old because they are older, well screw all you people who think that!!!!!
Oh yeah, this was about girls....I like girl gamers, they remind me of me only their girls and I like girls.

I really don't care if you are a guy or a girl(I'm a guy btw), all I care about is if you are competent, don't whine a lot, and don't have the urge to share your life story. I play mostly female characters because of the above stated reasons though.

hm... i like girls, might aswell play with them. ;)
girls are just as good as boys are in any game, sometimes even better ;D

ok girl gamers are great and all, but i wanna ask a very important question to u girls who play Halo, like Dragonfire and Rin... so pretend ur playig Halo 2 on XBox Live. u get completely owned like, BOOMHEADSHOTUDEADWTFJUSTHAPPENED? an u get T-Bagged (yea u know wat im talkin bout) then a while later u kill who ever t-bagged u. i know all the characters you can in Halo are guys (not sure about Elites :P) but would u t-bag somebody even though u are a girl and technically cant? and how do u feel about t-baggin in Halo? just wondering... xD

i play with girls all the time...(thats online BTW!) and i think girls should have the same rights as boys while playing games of any sort (oh yeah and im 19, and male)

Good article Rin, Looks like your getting more support than you thought was out there. My 0.02, nothing wrong with female players, bit older than 16 if you hadn't guessed. I have played with plenty, have met a few, and I am sure have played with many more that didn't make it known.

The body doesn't really matter, its that mind that runs it that does. I play male and female character, most of mine are female, becaust one they are easier on the eye, and two seems easier to get groups with female characters. :oP (Female Character + Monk = Quick Group Pick up) ;o)

Very nice article Rin, right about time that someone wrote about it. It was that I'm not a girl, so I couldn't do it.

Since my beginning of gaming (Delta Force 1) I've always played with girls. I have been member of the best EU squad DF has known, and guess what, there were 3 girls in that, who all would kick my ass if I weren't sniper at that time.

Aye. If it weren't for gaming girls (who became quite good friends after a while) I would have stopped playing DF much earlier than I did. Females are deffinately an great addition to the male-ruled gaming scene.

Then comes the fact that I'm straight. What kind of man would I be to ignore the female being? :)

I am not an evil minion though. I'm evil, possibly, but I will never be a minion! Never!

I play female characters for the same reasons you play the male ones. They just look cool'er.

I, for one, play with a few 'real' female characters. They are more than competent! I really don't see why being male or female makes ANY difference at all. It's how you play the game, reagrdless of gender.

Some people are just 'isolated' in their worlds that they fail to realize how large the world really is. But then again, I am an old fart, so.....pretty much been there, done that.

Im not sure I care to much if ppl think I am a guy or a girl. :) I know who and what I am so let them say what they want. I used to let what others think bother me. But i realized it was messing with my game play.

I used to only play female char.'s but i have branched out on my second acount to male char's to. I like wearing my male suites cause then i can tease my freind who are guys, and wearing girl suites.

Sorry if my male sexest comments bother you. But being a guy kinda goes to my head. LOL

The best thing in pvp today, when IWAY is everywhere in tombs(hate them)
, is that when i get on vent, and hear a girls voice!!
That shows that girls are just as good in GW as boys, if not better.

Nice article. I believe that females and males can e equal/better/worse than each other. All depends on ability rather than gender.

if you don't like what people are saying about your gender, the quickest way to stop it happening is to not respond to it. it will very quickly get boring for the person doing the teasing. simple & effective.

I understand that many girls play video games, and I am not against that at all. I play a lot of CS and well, I was pwned the other day by some girl on my server. It was actually kind of scary, not many people take me out like that with such ease.

I am a 16 year old male, and hell, I prefer gaming with females. Not because you can be all flirty (if that is what you're into), but because of less fighting. Girls play games, and girls pwn as much as anyone who puts their mind to it. Simple fact, you get out of something as what you have put in.

Great Artical, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars!
