Morale is a cruel mistress. On the battlefield, it’s in constant fluctuation; one minute, it’s the nucleus of the battle cry. Next, it’s what can initiate the flight in one’s heart. For the non-military, morale is the fun, inebriated uncle you see only once a year. If not for Wintersday, the misery would be intolerable.
It is the thought of the battlefield that fills the hearts and souls of children. But, not the battlefield you may think. There’s no chance of dismemberment (except for the incident of a drunken dwarf attempting to use a salvage kit). There are cries, but those of joy and elation. Across all of Tyria, Cantha and Elona, the thoughts of the Wintersday Snowball Fight can bring a special happiness to the most down-trodden of souls.
Thoughts of snowmen used for on-the-fly bunkers. Miniature elves scurrying, not wanting to be buried in a mound of snow. Parent’s civilian and veterans alike, gleefully partaking in dwarven ale. These images are what ensure the everyday citizens retain their sanity.
Many prepare for the trek to Beacon’s Perch. Nestled in the Shiverpeaks, featuring an uncontested beauty not found since the days of the Gods, Beacon’s is a middle point between the most popular places in Tyria. Not being a stranger to many people running about and leaving tracks in the snow, the Perch is the undisputed home of a snowball fight of epic proportions.
Due to the popularity of Wintersday, many who are in the traveling business trim prices, helping more families reach the festivities. Merchants play their part as well, having a special sell on items one may need for their journey. Even the stingiest of sellers recognize the boost of sales, thanks to discounted prices. Those who can afford the price of hired help, to ensure the family reaches their destination as safely as possible, can do so at various points in their journey. Of course, there are those who are overcome with the spirit of giving and offer their services for free.
Upon arrival, all are presented with complimentary hats to wear during and even after the festivities. During all times of the year, many wear their hats proudly like a badge of honor. And deal with the many “Where did you get the hat?” questions from those who did not have the honor of partaking in Wintersday. Parents also receive a complimentary flask of firewater, which many choose to sip on, due to the ferocity of the spirit. For those who are inclined to adventuring and bravery, various collector’s give the chance to exchange items picked up from the creatures of the land for items one can only find during Wintersday. Accruing such items as the sought after dwarven ale or even fruitcake, helps boost the adventuring side in all persons.
All of this is merely a bonus during the celebration. Fighting with balls of snow is the one feature that all wish to enjoy. Teaching values such as teamwork, strategy, and how to have old fashioned fun helps future adventurers. Of course, who doesn’t like the thought of hitting a rival with a snowball as they stand laughing at your team?
With many festivals that occur across the lands every year, Wintersday may not have the best attendance, but there’s truly a spirit of unity and peace that encompasses all who attend. Those feelings last a lifetime and cannot be replicated by the many other events.
Before long, Wintersday will be upon the world once again. Echoes of glee mingled with drinking odes will shimmer throughout not just the Shiverpeaks, but reaching across all lands, boosting the morale and excitement among all. Perhaps morale isn’t so cruel, after all.
